The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sparta shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. velazquez is trying to defend but Sparta finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
velazquez looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight!
Sparta is working for a kimura but velazquez is defending it quite comfortably.

Sparta decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.
A punch combination from velazquez misses.
Sparta shoots for a double leg takedown but velazquez sprawls well. He's pushed Sparta's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Sparta's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Sparta tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Sparta is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. velazquez is aware though and is defending well.

velazquez drops back, looking for a kneebar! Sparta looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Sparta looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Sparta!

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.
Sparta throws a combination that misses
and velazquez counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
The fight stays on the outside here - Sparta looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Sparta closes the distance and clinches.
Sparta is trying to trip velazquez. He has hold of a leg but velazquez is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Sparta persists though and gets the takedown into guard.

Sparta is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Sparta drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Sparta jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Sparta gets the takedown into side control.
velazquez takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.
velazquez tries to bench press Sparta off him but Sparta keeps the position.
Sparta takes a little break here. velazquez wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.

velazquez gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!
Sparta misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

velazquez avoids a series of strikes thrown by Sparta.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!
A telegraphed right hand from Sparta misses the target.
Sparta shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts velazquez as he jumps to the side.
Bart Sparta seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Sparta changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. velazquez tries to avoid it but Sparta manages to keep hold of a leg and drag velazquez to the ground. velazquez escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Sparta lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but velazquez circles away quickly and effectively.
velazquez takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Sparta fails in his attempt to clinch.

Sparta is looking to clinch but velazquez is avoiding it.
Sparta throws a right and a left that both miss.
Sparta feints and as velazquez raises his hands in defense, Sparta changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
velazquez is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Sparta defends well.
Sparta passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Sparta advances to mount.

velazquez is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Sparta lands a big shot there that rocks velazquez but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
velazquez can't escape the position.
Sparta controlling from the full mount.
Sparta connects with a couple of good shots from mount.

Sparta jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… velazquez is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by velazquez and Sparta has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.

velazquez wants to get back to his feet but Sparta drags him back down.

Sparta is going oldschool here, as he tries to force velazquez to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so velazquez shrugs it off.
velazquez tries to hold on but Sparta postures up.

jordy velazquez has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Bart Sparta is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Sparta has hold of velazquez's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and velazquez manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
And that's the end of the fight!

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Sparta, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
