The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Good work by putin as he checks the leg kick.

Penn tries to bum rush putin with a series of wild strikes but putin uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

putin closes the distance and clinches up with Penn, looking for a takedown. putin pushes Penn against the cage but Penn circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

A looping hook to the body misses from putin. Penn does a little dance to reset his feet.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Penn works over putin's head and body with a nice combination.
putin shoots in for a takedown but Penn shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Penn throws a series of punches but putin moves out of range.

Penn walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.
Penn fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt putin.
Some bone on bone action there as putin checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.
putin misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Rampage Penn has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of vladimir putin.
putin looks gassed!
putin shoots in but no luck this time.
Penn misses with the combination.
Penn throws a series of punches but putin moves out of range.
Penn does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.
putin shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Penn but Penn pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Penn drops putin with a right and a left! Penn comes rushing in but putin regains his composure and manages to keep Penn in guard.

It looks like vladimir putin has been cut.
Penn is pushing down on putin's leg trying to pass to half guard. putin is fighting to maintain full guard but Penn has managed to sneak the leg through.
putin is still in real trouble! Can Penn finish him?

Penn is looking for a kimura but putin is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Penn to get the leverage.
putin seems to have recovered his senses.
putin keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

putin wants to control but Penn is keeping busy.
Penn wants to free his trapped foot but putin is holding on for dear life with his legs.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Penn wants to work for an arm triangle but putin is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Penn is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and putin reverses the position - he's now on top in Penn's guard.
Penn is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Penn clobbers putin with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.

putin seems to be squinting his left eye. Perhaps he got a poke in that previous exchange. Penn shows no mercy and swarms him with a barage of strikes! putin is backing up but Penn catches him with a final right hook that drops him! putin covers up and the referee steps in to end the fight! Penn Jumps to his feet and flashes his guns to the crowd. Oh yeah, baby! How'd you like them apples?!
