PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between ted johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and janpeter kurkela (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). kurkela has chosen Korpiklaani:Wood pint as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. The key to victory for ted johnson has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, ted johnson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, janpeter kurkela!
The judges for this bout are Ben Zyskovitsi, Roosa Järviläinen and Matti Vanhoillinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
kurkela will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
johnson moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.
kurkela throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and johnson counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in kurkela's guard now.
kurkela not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
johnson is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
kurkela is adopting a defensive guard.
johnson prevents kurkela from getting back to his feet.
johnson trying to stand up but can't free himself from kurkela's guard.
johnson really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

and johnson decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in kurkela's guard.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Still in half guard, johnson seems content to control.

kurkela pushes johnson off looking to stand but johnson dives back in and keeps control.

johnson is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so kurkela is just riding it out for now. johnson eventually gives up the hold.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
kurkela throws a combination that misses

and johnson counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by johnson.
johnson loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
johnson works a leg free and moves into half guard.
kurkela wants to control but johnson is keeping busy and won't allow it.
kurkela looks like he's trying to stand up.

kurkela has one foot on johnson's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.
johnson tries to close the distance and clinch but kurkela swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

and johnson counters with a good low kick that kurkela was not able to check.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
johnson fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but kurkela avoids it really well and circles away.
johnson will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

kurkela takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Despite being in the dominant position, janpeter kurkela just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

johnson throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around kurkela's waist but kurkela gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing johnson off to one side.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

janpeter kurkela showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

johnson is squirming around, avoiding kurkela's attempts to control the action.
johnson manages to regain half guard. Good work.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to ted johnson.
I think johnson has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
