PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between David Otunga (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Marco Kendal (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Otunga kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Till I Collapse. Marco Kendal is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, David Otunga!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Marco Kendal!
The judges for this bout are Vladimir Khabensky, Fedor Mirinova and Aleksei Zolotukhin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Otunga.
Kendal throws a head kick that misses.

Kendal closes the distance and pushes Otunga back into the cage.
Both fighters working to control the clinch.
Otunga is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.

Kendal breaks the clinch.
Kendal avoids a kick to the body.
Kendal throws a head kick that misses.
Otunga keeps the fight on the outside.

Kendal looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Kendal is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Otunga wants to improve his position but Kendal is controlling well.

Otunga pushes Kendal off looking to stand but Kendal dives back in and keeps control.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Kendal connects with a nice short shot to Otunga's temple.
Otunga wants to control but Kendal is keeping busy.
Kendal takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Otunga tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.
Otunga is trying to maintain the position but Kendal is very close to passing his half guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Kendal looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
Otunga throws a strike from the bottom but Kendal passes into side control!

Kendal cracks Otunga with an elbow. That is naaassty.

Otunga manages to work his way to half guard, despite Kendal's best efforts.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Otunga is looking to get back to full guard here but Kendal has managed to pass to side control instead.
A nice elbow there by Kendal.
Kendal is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Otunga can't stay in a position like this for much longer.
Otunga is breathing heavily.
Kendal content just to control the position here.
Kendal avoids the attempt from Otunga to control.

Let's hope that Kendal has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

That's time! Otunga's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

Otunga trying to control the position but instead, Kendal has worked for underhooks and has pushed Otunga into the cage.

Kendal is trying to trip Otunga. He has hold of a leg but Otunga is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Kendal persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Otunga is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Kendal stays in close to Otunga's body and controls the position.
Kendal is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.

Kendal has gone for a leg lock! Otunga slips out almost immediately though and dives into Kendal's guard.
Otunga wants to control from the top but Kendal keeps moving.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Kendal is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Otunga kicks Kendal off and gets back to his feet.

and Kendal decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Otunga's guard.

Kendal really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Otunga. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Otunga is wriggling around but Kendal manages to pass to half guard.
Kendal looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Otunga with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.

Otunga won't allow Kendal to pass to mount.

Otunga looks like he's trying to stand up.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Kendal closes the distance and pushes Otunga back into the cage.

Kendal escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Kendal shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Otunga napping and manages to drive through into side control!
You can see the frustration on Otunga's face as Kendal controls the position.
Otunga is looking for a sweep.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
A lull in the action here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Marco Kendal showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


Kendal stuns Otunga with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range.
Otunga closes the distance but Kendal moves to the side

and Kendal counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Otunga's guard now.
Marco Kendal has got the better of the ground game so far.
Otunga wants to stand but Kendal is controlling the position.

Kendal stands up from guard. Let's bang!
Kendal lands a powerful looking uppercut that connected with his opponent's jaw.
Otunga throws a body kick despite being completely out of range

so Kendal counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Otunga wants to stand up but Kendal is controlling him.
Otunga can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Kendal controls the pace.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Otunga is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Kendal preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.

Otunga wants to stand up but Kendal is controlling the position.
Kendal moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Kendal holds on and takes a little breather.
Otunga wants to control from the top but Kendal keeps moving.

Marco Kendal comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Kendal has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
