The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Maia lands a nice shot that snaps Dukes's head back.

It looks like Frank Dukes has been cut.
Dukes throws out a loose jab but Maia uses good head movement to avoid it.
A clash of legs there as Maia blocks the low kick.
Nice sprawl there from Dukes as Maia shoots in.
Dukes misses with a hook. Maia ducked under it nicely.

Dukes rushes Maia and presses him up against the cage.
Dukes throws an elbow but it misses.

Maia is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Dukes defends well.

Dukes has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Maia is proving hard to escape from.

Dukes really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Maia. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Maia working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Dukes doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Dukes manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Maia controls Dukes momentarily but Dukes frees himself.

Maia had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Dukes defends it easily.
Maia is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Maia is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Dukes to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Dukes shrugs it off.

Maia working for a submission here. He's tucked his head under his opponent's arm, looking for an arm triangle. He's hopped off into side control, looking to tighten the submission... is it going to work? He's given up a good position looking for it. Dukes looks OK. Oh, I spoke too soon, he's out! That must have been tighter than I thought! Excellent work there by Maia! Submission of the night perhaps?
