PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Nobu Murphy (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jack Mason (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Nobu Murphy!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jack Mason!
The judges for this bout are Skip Squint, Bruno Hogan and Winston Howard.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Murphy closes this distance looking for a takedown but Mason circles away.
Murphy does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.
Murphy misses with a body shot.
Murphy fails in his attempt to clinch.
Murphy tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Murphy is defended easily by Mason.

Mason closes the distance and clinches.
Murphy wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Mason has him pressed against the cage.

Mason escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Murphy shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Nobu Murphy. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Murphy really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

and Mason counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Mason.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

Murphy wants to sweep here but Mason controlling him for the moment.

Mason drops back looking for a leg! Murphy is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Murphy manages to kick Mason off! Mason jumps back into Murphy's guard.

Murphy has gone for a leg lock! Mason slips out almost immediately though and dives into Murphy's guard.

Mason might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Murphy kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Mason thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Mason drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Mason jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

and Mason counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Murphy!

Murphy tries to hold on but Mason postures up.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Murphy has his foot on Mason's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Mason works his way back into a safe position though.

Mason throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Murphy works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Jack Mason showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!

Mason throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Murphy blocks it with crossed arms.
Murphy looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Mason lands a short shot on the inside that snaps the head of Murphy backwards.

Mason has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Murphy uses from the top position.
Mason is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Mason moves nicely into side control.

Murphy is trying to control Mason's posture but Mason avoids it.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Mason working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

Mason wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Murphy, who protects the arm well.

Mason tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Mason has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Murphy wants to control but Mason postures up.
Murphy is trying to buck Mason off.

Mason thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Mason works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head.
Murphy manages to work his way to half guard, despite Mason's best efforts.

Mason wants to take a breather but Murphy is having none of it.

Mason is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Murphy defends it well.

Murphy is looking to control Mason's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Murphy avoid being mounted?
Mason moves nicely into side control.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Mason has hold of Murphy's arm here. He's working for an Americana. It looks like he might have it! Murphy tries to escape but he's just digging himself in deeper - Mason cranks the arm and Murphy screams in pain! The ref makes a decision and ends the fight before the tap - no complains from Murphy, who is just happy to have his arm attached to his body.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:22 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Americana). Jack Mason!
