Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between John Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rob Mendez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). John Jones has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, John Jones!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Rob Mendez!
The judges for this bout are Vladimir Khabensky, Valeri Chadov and Aleksei Zolotukhin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Mendez closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Jones on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Jones tries to get out of the position.
The strikes coming from Mendez are missing the target in this wave of attacks.

Mendez is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Jones knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Jones is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Mendez asserts his dominance and retains side control.
You can see the frustration on Jones's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

It looks like Rob Mendez has been cut.

Mendez tries to keep at a distance but Jones has taken the fight into the clinch.

Jones tries to close the distance and clinch up but Mendez swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Jones knocks Mendez to the floor with a head kick! Can he finish him!?
Jones is breathing heavily.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Jones stands up and we're back to a striking position.
A looping hook to the body misses from Jones. Mendez does a little dance to reset his feet.
Jones throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Jones lands a two punch combo.


That has opened up Rob Mendez's cut even more.
Mendez is looking to clinch.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Mendez.

Mendez is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Jones wants to get up but he can't break Mendez's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Mendez looking for a sweep. Not yet Mendez, not yet.
Jones throws a strike but Mendez rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Mendez wants to control from the top but Jones keeps moving.
Mendez stands and throws Jones's legs to the side, diving into side control.

Mendez stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Mendez has a takedown stuffed.

Mendez closes this distance looking for a takedown but Jones circles away.
Jones misses with a head kick.
Mendez slaps away a takedown attempt from Jones, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Mendez tries to close the distance and clinch but Jones swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Mendez fails with a takedown attempt from distance.

Mendez feints and as Jones raises his hands in defense, Mendez changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Jones has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Mendez is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Jones.

Mendez is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Jones knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Jones wants to get back to his feet but Mendez drags him back down.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Jones's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Jones takes a push kick to the midsection and stumbles backwards.
Jones throws a head kick but Mendez moves out of range.
Jones throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Jones jabs at Mendez's body.
Jones wants to clinch.
Mendez doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Jones moves into the clinch.
Jones is trying to break the clinch but Mendez is controlling him.
Mendez tries to pull guard but Jones won't allow it.
Mendez gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Jones.
Mendez jumps guard but Jones stands there with Mendez around his waist. Mendez gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

John Jones seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Mendez dives in and grabs Jones's left leg, looking for a takedown. Jones pushes down on Mendez's head and hops out.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Mendez thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Mendez shoots in looking for a takedown. Jones tries to sprawl out of it but Mendez keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Jones manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Jones looks to throw the jab but Mendez is out of range.
Mendez shoots in and drives through. Jones sprawls well.
Mendez has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Mendez there as he acknowledges the shot.
Jones misses with the body kick

and Mendez counters with a nice double leg into side control. Jones won't be happy with that.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Jones tries to bench press Mendez off him but Mendez keeps the position.

Mendez looks up at the clock and then as Jones takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Mendez smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!

Mendez goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Jones has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Mendez but great work by Jones.

Jones working the strikes but Mendez uses the opportunity to regain half guard.

Mendez has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Jones is working away from the top position though.
Jones working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Jones thows a big elbow that misses, also allowing Mendez to regain full guard.

Jones breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Jones stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Jones wants it to stay on the feet.

Jones wants to get back to his feet but Mendez is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Mendez drops back, looking for a kneebar! Jones looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Jones looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Jones!

Jones decides to stand back up.

Jones lands a jab followed by a nice looking cross.
Jones leaves Mendez with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Jones scores with a nice head shot.
Jones misses the jab.
Jones is really head hunting here, hardly looking to strike to the body at all.

Mendez pushes Jones up against the cage in a clinch.
Mendez is trying to maintain a safe position but Jones gets an underhook and turns Mendez into the cage.
Jones has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Mendez is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Jones gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

Jones pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Jones dives in and grabs Mendez's left leg, looking for a takedown. Mendez pushes down on Jones's head and hops out.
Mendez shoots for a double leg takedown but Jones sprawls well. He's pushed Mendez's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Jones is pressed up against the cage. Mendez has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Jones down to the mat. Jones avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.

Jones has closed the distance and engaged Mendez in a clinch.

Jones manages to break the clinch.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to John Jones.
I think Jones has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
