PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Kenny McGrimshaw (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rudi Voller (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). McGrimshaw's entrance music is Pharoahe Monch - Simon Says. A fine choice. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Kenny McGrimshaw!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Rudi Voller!
The judges for this bout are Aafke Stam, Daniel Blasius and Paul Aken.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
McGrimshaw fails with an attempt to clinch.
A nice leg kick lands there from Voller.
Voller looks to land a combination. McGrimshaw sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.

McGrimshaw is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Voller's half guard.
Voller is staying active underneath McGrimshaw, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
McGrimshaw moves into full mount! Voller won't be happy about that!
Voller tries to lock up and control but McGrimshaw gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

McGrimshaw is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Voller has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Voller!

Voller stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. McGrimshaw swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Voller moves into the clinch.

Voller drags the fight down to the ground.
Voller tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Voller tries to strike from the bottom.
McGrimshaw pushing down on Voller's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.

Voller is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute McGrimshaw jumps into side control!

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
McGrimshaw tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no McGrimshaw has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Voller is looking for a sweep.

Voller pushes McGrimshaw away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, McGrimshaw gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
Voller is not content to let McGrimshaw control the position.

McGrimshaw is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Voller knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Voller tries to wriggle free to get back to his feet but he's given up his back! Oops.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Kenny McGrimshaw will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


A head kick from Voller lands but McGrimshaw takes it in his stride.
McGrimshaw closes the distance and clinches up with Voller, looking for a takedown. McGrimshaw pushes Voller against the cage but Voller circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Voller defends well against a solid takedown attempt from McGrimshaw.
Voller lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.
Voller connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
McGrimshaw attempts a low kick but it misses it's target.
Voller lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as McGrimshaw backs up against the cage.
Voller throws a right and a left that both miss.

Voller scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
McGrimshaw might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

McGrimshaw has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Voller is working away from the top position though.

Voller got a little sloppy there for a moment and McGrimshaw has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Voller has managed to get both his arms back between McGrimshaw's legs - danger averted.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
McGrimshaw slips a jab and a cross from Voller.

Voller closes the distance and pushes McGrimshaw back into the cage.

McGrimshaw wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Voller.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Voller thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed McGrimshaw's head.

Voller with a flurry of punches that miss.
McGrimshaw utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rudi Voller showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


McGrimshaw misses with a takedown

and Voller counters with a nice double leg into side control. McGrimshaw won't be happy with that.

Voller looks up at the clock and then as McGrimshaw takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Voller smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!
McGrimshaw can't do much from the bottom here.
Voller lands a nice forearm strike.
Voller scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at McGrimshaw to see if he's OK.

Voller stands up and we're back to a striking position.

and Voller counters with a stiff right hand.
Voller throws a series of punches but McGrimshaw moves out of range.

Voller escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Rudi Voller seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

and Voller counters with a three punch combo that has McGrimshaw backing up. McGrimshaw nods at Voller to acknowledge the strikes.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Voller manages to break the clinch.
Voller lands with a kick to the temple. McGrimshaw shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"
McGrimshaw gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Voller counters with a body kick that stops McGrimshaw in his tracks momentarily.

Voller shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. McGrimshaw manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Voller wants to get up but he can't break McGrimshaw's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Voller stands up and waves to McGrimshaw to follow him.
McGrimshaw doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Voller counters with a low kick, right behind McGrimshaw 's knee.

Voller closes the distance and clinches.
McGrimshaw is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.

Voller gets control of McGrimshaw's arms and successfully pulls guard. Voller will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

McGrimshaw gets to his feet. Voller looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Voller closes the distance and pushes McGrimshaw back into the cage.
Voller lands a knee to the head.
A frustrated look appears on McGrimshaw's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Voller prevents McGrimshaw from breaking the clinch.
McGrimshaw jumps guard but Voller stands there with McGrimshaw around his waist. McGrimshaw gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
McGrimshaw is working for takedown but Voller is calmly controlling the position for now.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
McGrimshaw has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Voller avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
McGrimshaw has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Voller is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Voller escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Voller bobs and weaves and then throws a good body kick.

And that's the end of the fight!
Rudi Voller comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Voller has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
