PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Trap and Roll (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jan Mathisen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd giving both fighters a great reception on their way into the arena. That's good to see.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Trap and Roll!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Jan Mathisen!
The judges for this bout are Vladimir Khabensky, Illya Tyunina and Aleksei Zolotukhin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mathisen lands a body shot.

and Roll scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mathisen is looking to improve his position.
and Roll is looking to take a break and control but Mathisen is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
and Roll thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Mathisen's head.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
and Roll lands strikes from half guard.

and Roll stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Mathisen to get to his feet.

and Roll bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
and Roll works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head.

That's one minute gone in the round.
and Roll tries to get to his feet but Mathisen is in the middle of advancing position himself and ends up with and Roll in his guard.
and Roll pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Mathisen is keeping the position for now.

Mathisen is looking for a triangle but and Roll pushes his legs off easily.
and Roll looking to pass the guard.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Mathisen is on top in guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
and Roll is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
and Roll is breathing heavily.

and Roll is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.

and Roll is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.

and Roll's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
and Roll shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Mathisen but Mathisen pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Mathisen is looking to clinch.

Mathisen clinches up with and Roll and pushes him back against the cage.
and Roll is working for takedown but Mathisen is calmly controlling the position for now.

Mathisen gets control of and Roll's arms and successfully pulls guard. Mathisen will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
and Roll wants to control from the top but Mathisen keeps moving.
Mathisen is trying to keep and Roll in close.
Mathisen seems keen to control and Roll's posture.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Mathisen keeping moving, preventing and Roll from controlling successfully.
and Roll trying to move into half guard but instead Mathisen has managed to sweep!

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Mathisen thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Mathisen wants to control from the top but and Roll keeps moving.
and Roll is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Trap and Roll will probably get the nod.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!


No luck with that takedown attempt from Mathisen.
Jan Mathisen seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Left hook, right uppercut from and Roll.
Mathisen shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says and Roll as he avoids it easily.
Mathisen fails to land the takedown.
Trap and Roll has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jan Mathisen.
Mathisen misses with a jab, cross combination.

and Roll rushes Mathisen and presses him up against the cage.
and Roll goes for a takedown in the clinch but Mathisen prevents it.
and Roll is clearly stalling here... Pick up the pace son.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

and Roll escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

That's one minute gone in the round.
and Roll is looking to clinch.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Mathisen is defended easily by and Roll.

and Roll shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
and Roll seems to be looking to move to his opponent's back but Mathisen is holding on tight.
and Roll knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Mathisen on the ground.
Mathisen working to try and regain half guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

and Roll looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
Mathisen is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
and Roll tries to control but Mathisen wriggling away.
and Roll misses with some ground and pound and Mathisen recovers position to half guard.
and Roll is just content to waste time from the top position. Mathisen takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
and Roll would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
and Roll wants to pass the guard but Mathisen is keeping the position.
and Roll has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Mathisen trying to keep a closed guard but and Roll is proving a slippery customer.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Mathisen has thrown up a leg looking for a triangle. and Roll doesn't defend quickly enough and Mathisen has managed to lock this one up! Can and Roll escape?! NO! He's tapping out! Damn, that was a quick submission - congrats to Mathisen on a fantastic submission victory.
