Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Alexandre Calero (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Matt Joones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Calero comes to the cage accompanied by In Slaughter Natives - Sacrosancts Bleed. Alexandre Calero has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Alexandre Calero!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Matt Joones!
The judges for this bout are Stewart Dunkirk, Wesley Smith and Daniel Franklin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Calero swings and misses with a hook to the body.
An inside leg kick from Calero misses.
Joones staying out of range there.

Calero bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Joones regains half guard.
Calero wants to free his trapped foot but Joones is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Joones looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
Joones has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Calero is working away from the top position though.
Calero could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Joones looking for submissions from an awkward position here.

Joones moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Calero thows a big elbow that misses.

Joones is looking for a triangle but Calero pushes his legs off easily.
Calero trying to control but Joones is working from the bottom.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Calero is working for a submission of some sort.
Joones is pressing down on Calero's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Calero has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Joones working away from the bottom but not quite defensive enough there because Calero has passed into half guard!

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Joones bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Calero's guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Matt Joones will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Calero misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Joones shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Joones is nestled in close to Calero, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Calero takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head.

Joones cracks Calero with a big right hand but Calero just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.

You can see the frustration on Calero's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Joones lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Calero down.

Calero is trying to control Joones's posture but Joones avoids it.
Joones advances to mount.
BOOM! Joones connects with a massive shot to the dome!
Matt Joones has got the better of the ground game so far.

Joones working for a guillotine from mount but Calero is in no mood to give up.
Calero is trying to escape the mount.
Joones scores with a couple of good head shots there.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Calero is looking to get to half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Matt Joones showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


A combination from Calero does no damage.

and Calero counters with a nice double leg into guard.

Joones is looking for a triangle here but Calero uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.

Joones is squirming around, avoiding Calero's attempts to control the action.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Calero is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Joones can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.

Calero patiently working for the choke. Which fighter will keep their nerve here?

Calero gets his hands free as Joones looks to control.

Calero doesn't have the hooks in and Joones manages to turn into his guard.
Joones with a nice head shot there.
Joones with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.

Joones avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Joones lands a couple of digs.
Joones advances position into side control!
Joones looks up at the clock and then as Calero takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Joones smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!

Joones wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Calero, who protects the arm well.

Joones tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Joones working the ground and pound but he's contacting the mat, not the fighter.
Alexandre Calero has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Matt Joones is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Joones decides to stand back up. Joones steps back and let's Calero get back to his feet.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Alexandre Calero.
Well Joones has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
