PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between James Edwards (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mat Karim (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Buckle up people - heeeeeeeeeere we go!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, James Edwards!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Mat Karim!
The judges for this bout are Taro Takaoka, Yasuomi Hirokawa and Yuuki Gou.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Karim showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Edwards.

Edwards shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Karim tries to hold on but Edwards postures up.

Edwards stands up from the dominant position. He obviously fancies his chances standing.
Karim fails with the takedown

and Edwards counters by moving into the clinch.

Edwards gets control of Karim's arms and successfully pulls guard. Edwards will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Edwards looking to hit a scissor sweep but Karim is one step ahead there.
Karim looks gassed!
Edwards wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Edwards working a defensive guard but Karim passes into half guard.
Edwards has his hands clasped together around Karim's back. He's all about the action.
Edwards knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Karim on the ground.
Karim prevents Edwards from improving his position.
Edwards wants to get back to full guard but Karim has passed into side control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Karim swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Edwards is now in Karim's guard. A big mistake from Karim there, giving up the dominant position!
Edwards trying to control but Karim is working from the bottom.
Edwards slips nicely into half guard.
Edwards not doing much here.

Karim is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Edwards pulls his head out easily.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Edwards perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Edwards wants to take a breather but Karim is having none of it.

Karim looking for submissions off his back.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Edwards wants to free his trapped foot but Karim is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Edwards is keen to just control but Karim is a slippery customer.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Karim throws a series of punches but Edwards avoids them all with ease.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Karim misses with a takedown

and Edwards counters by clinching up.
The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.
Edwards tries to pull guard but Karim won't allow it.

Edwards works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
Karim keeping moving, preventing Edwards from controlling successfully.
Karim is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Karim is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Edwards has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Edwards working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Karim's head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

James Edwards dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.



Edwards rushes Karim and presses him up against the cage.

Edwards jumps into guard, dragging Karim to the mat.

Edwards isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Karim stacks Edwards on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Karim!

Karim has hold of Edwards's arm. He's looking for a kimura. Edwards seems comfortable defending it but Karim has shifted his position slighty and is cranking on the arm! Edwards is real pain and he's forced to tap out! Edwards is disgusted with himself for not defending it better but Karim couldn't care less - he's delighted!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:24 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Mat Karim!
