The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Vandam pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Vandam misses with a double jab.
putin shoots in for a double leg but Vandam sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Vandam cracks putin with a right hand to the side of the head.
putin tries to clinch but Vandam moves out of range.
A punch combination from Vandam misses.
Vandam pulls out of a head kick attempt.
putin tries for a takedown but Vandam sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
putin fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for vladimir putin. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Horrible takedown by putin or perhaps it was just good defense by Vandam which made him look bad.

putin feints and as Vandam raises his hands in defense, putin changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

putin stops Vandam from standing up.
putin distracts Vandam with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as putin accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
putin won't allow Vandam to get back to his feet.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Vandam can do anything to dispel that myth.
putin controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

putin is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
putin in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
putin is on the wrong end of a nice combination from Vandam.

It looks like vladimir putin has been cut.
putin slips a jab and a cross from Vandam.
putin blocks a head kick by Vandam.

putin looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
putin moves nicely into side control.
Vandam looks gassed!
putin moves into full mount!
Vandam really wants to buck putin off and get back to his feet.

Vandam throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Vandam displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from putin.
putin throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Vandam's waist but Vandam gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing putin off to one side.
A combination from Vandam does no damage.
Vandam misses with the combination.
putin closes this distance looking for a takedown but Vandam circles away.

Vandam misses with a few strikes there.
putin shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Vandam but Vandam pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Tyler Vandam seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
putin looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Vandam is fending him off so far but putin persists. Nope, Vandam circles away and we're back to standing.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from putin is defended easily by Vandam.
Vandam looks for the body kick but putin saw that one coming.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Vandam lands a jab followed by a vicious hook that sends putin sprawling to the canvas. Vandam follows him down, looking for the kill. Can putin hang on?

Vandam is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Vandam is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.
putin is trying is best to control the position here.
putin manages to get to full guard.
Vandam wanted to stand there but putin had control of the position.
Vandam must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
putin pulls Vandam in close to prevent any damage.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Vandam tries to stand but putin is controlling from the bottom.
Vandam wants to stand and escape but instead putin has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.
putin pushes down on Vandam's leg and manages to get into half guard.

putin in half guard on the top. He's looking for a kimura... He's got it locked and he's managed to free his trapped foot. Vandam tries to escape but it's on too tight and he has to tap! Great BJJ skills there from putin!
