Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Michael Kelso (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Pauli Painija (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Kelso comes to the cage accompanied by That 70's Show Theme Music. Michael Kelso has a significant reach advantage - let's see if he can make it count.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Michael Kelso!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Pauli Painija!
The judges for this bout are Damien Edna, John Mangel and Hugh Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Painija shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Kelso is trying to defend but Painija finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

Kelso is defending against the submission attempts here by Painija.

Kelso is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Painija pulls his head out easily.
Kelso is looking to control Painija's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Kelso avoid being mounted?
Painija thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Kelso's head.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Painija connects with a nice short shot to Kelso's temple.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Kelso throws a hook to the body. More of an arm punch but it's all scoring with the judges.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Kelso catches Painija with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong!
Kelso keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Painija shoots in for a takedown but Kelso shows good takedown defense.
Painija looks gassed!
Kelso lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Painija at a distance.
Painija is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.
Kelso doesn't manage to clinch there - Painija circles away.

Kelso closes the distance but Painija moves to the side

and Painija counters by clinching up.
Kelso wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Painija has him pressed against the cage.

Kelso breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
The fighters circling - Kelso throws out the jab but it was never going to land.

Painija drops his hands momentarily and Kelso takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.

Kelso lands with a good tight uppercut to the head.
Kelso wants to break free but Painija has control.
Kelso tries to circle away but Painija has him pinned against the cage.
Kelso wants to break the clinch but can't.
Kelso lands on the inside with an uppercut.

Painija looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.
Kelso lands with a hook. Painija tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.

This has been an exciting period of action!

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Kelso lands a shot to the body.
A frustrated look appears on Kelso's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Painija misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Kelso.
Kelso doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Kelso is trying to break free.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Painija shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Kelso sprawls well. Kelso wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Painija gets slowly back to his feet.

Painija takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.

Painija tries to bum rush Kelso with a series of wild strikes but Kelso uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Painija closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Kelso did well to prevent Painija getting side control.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Kelso lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.
Painija swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.

Painija shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Kelso as he jumps to the side.
Painija shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.

Kelso leaves Painija with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Kelso is squirming around, avoiding Painija's attempts to control the action.
Painija lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
Painija pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
BOOM! Painija connects with a massive shot to the dome!

Kelso is bucking up trying to escape but Painija cracks him with another couple of good strikes.
Painija cracks Kelso with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Kelso wants to control but Painija is having none of it.

Pauli Painija has got the better of the ground game so far.

Painija takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

Kelso actively working from the bottom here.
Painija takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Kelso gets back to full guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Painija looking to sit in guard and control but Kelso gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Painija pushes Kelso off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.
