Hammer's ring entrance music is that housewives' favourite, Overkill - Hammerhead. Ippo Hammer has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, for the middleweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.

The judges for this bout are Shirou Masuda, Taro Takaoka and Yuuki Gou.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rua ducks under a wild hook from Hammer.

Hammer moves into the clinch.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground.
Hammer fails with an attempt to clinch.
Hammer tries to close the distance and clinch up against the ropes but Rua paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Hammer throws a nice looking combination but Rua bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

Hammer goes for a high kick. It partially lands.
Hammer is looking to clinch but Rua is avoiding it.

Rua closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Rua passes the guard and advances to mount!
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
Hammer is breathing heavily.

Rua goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Hammer turns into him and now he's in Rua's guard.

Rua is looking to sweep but instead, Hammer has passed into half guard.
Hammer is looking to take a break and control but Rua is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Hammer is working for a submission of some sort.
Rua is staying active underneath Hammer, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Hammer is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Rua wants to control but Hammer is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Hammer tries to clinch up.
Hammer is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

Rua displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Hammer throws out the jab.
Rua shoots in for a takedown but Hammer shows good takedown defense.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Rua shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Hammer as he jumps to the side.
Ippo Hammer has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Wanderlei Rua.
Rua avoids the head kick by Hammer.
Hammer moves in looking to clinch but Rua pushes him off.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Ippo Hammer will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!



Rua scores with a takedown into Hammer's guard.
Rua passes Hammer's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Rua wants to lay and pray for a moment but Hammer keeps working.

Rua seems to be looking for submissions.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
Rua is stalling here. Hammer is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Rua seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Hammer has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.

Hammer tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Hammer has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Hammer will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Rua sneaks back into half guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Rua gets full guard.
Hammer wants to get up but he can't break Rua's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Rua looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Hammer passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Hammer tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily.
Rua is looking for a sweep.
Hammer really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Hammer wants to stand but Rua has his arm trapped.

Hammer won't allow Rua to sweep him here.

Rua is looking to sinch up a triangle. Hammer throws the leg off to one side though and gets in tight to Rua's body to avoid the submission. Rua has instead reached around Hammer's neck and now has a guillotine! Oh, this is biiiig trouble! Rua arches his back and squeezes and forces the tap from his hapless opponent.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:44 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Wanderlei Rua!
