Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Joe Lanza (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kurt Johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Joe Lanza!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Kurt Johnson!
The judges for this bout are Eddie Farnsworth, Anthony Taglia and Jonathan Paton.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Lanza looks for a takedown but Johnson sprawls well.
Johnson fails with a takedown attempt.
Johnson tries to clinch but Lanza moves out of range.

Johnson closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Lanza did well to prevent Johnson getting side control.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

Lanza is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Lanza avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Johnson.
Johnson tries to stand but can't do so whilst Lanza controls his leg.
Johnson is pressing down on Lanza's thigh, looking to free his foot. Lanza is holding on for now.
Johnson is trying to control the action in half guard but Lanza is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Lanza takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.
Johnson tries to work over Lanza's front leg with a kick but Lanza checks it.
Johnson tries to close the distance and clinch up but Lanza swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Johnson displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Lanza.

Lanza misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Joe Lanza. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Johnson gets caught flat footed, as Lanza shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Johnson looks gassed!
Lanza not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Lanza drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Lanza jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Johnson is trying to control the position but Lanza postures up.

Lanza drops back, looking for a kneebar! Johnson looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Johnson looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Johnson!

Johnson decides to stand back up. Johnson steps back and let's Lanza get back to his feet.
Lanza takes a head kick and shrugs it off.


It looks like Joe Lanza has been cut.
Johnson lands with a thumping leg kick.
Johnson lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Johnson shoots and misses

and Lanza counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Johnson's guard now.
Lanza lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Lanza drops back looking for a leg! Johnson is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Johnson manages to kick Lanza off! Lanza jumps back into Johnson's guard.
Johnson lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Lanza!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Lanza is trying to reverse the position but instead Johnson has taken his back - oops!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Johnson lands a kick to the ribs of his opponent. Nice work there - in and out in a flash.
Johnson buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
Johnson connects with a solid leg kick.
No luck for Johnson with that takedown attempt.
Johnson comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.
Johnson tries a head kick but it misses.

Johnson rushes Lanza and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Johnson pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Johnson dives in and grabs Lanza's left leg, looking for a takedown. Lanza pushes down on Johnson's head and hops out.
Johnson throws a low kick but his opponent is out of range.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

and Johnson counters with a straight right hand.
Kurt Johnson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Lanza fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Johnson throws a head kick that misses.
Johnson throws a leg kick which misses Lanza's front leg but catches the back leg as Lanza tries to avoid it.
Lanza fails to land the takedown.
Johnson throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Lanza stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.

Johnson closes the distance and clinches.
Lanza has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Johnson avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Joe Lanza. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Johnson lands a nice looking hook to the body, against the cage.

Johnson manages to break the clinch.
Lanza blocks a low kick nicely.
Joe Lanza is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Lanza tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Johnson paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Lanza is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Johnson passes Lanza's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Lanza won't allow Johnson to pass to mount.
Lanza makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Lanza.
Johnson must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Lanza is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Lanza has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Johnson can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

A close second round but Kurt Johnson will probably get the nod - 10:9.

Johnson moves into the clinch.

Johnson gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Lanza preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.
Lanza is pressing down on Johnson's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Johnson stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Lanza swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Lanza is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Johnson loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Johnson leaves Lanza with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Lanza drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Johnson gets the underhooks and prevents it.

Johnson jumps guard and drags Lanza to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

Lanza has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.
Johnson pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Lanza shoots in and bounces Johnson off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Johnson wants to sweep here but Lanza controlling him for the moment.
Kurt Johnson is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Lanza drops back looking for a leg! Johnson is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Johnson manages to kick Lanza off! Lanza jumps back into Johnson's guard.
Lanza looking to sit in guard and control but Johnson gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Lanza is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Johnson is aware though and is defending well.
Joe Lanza has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Kurt Johnson comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Johnson winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
