PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Kevin Spencer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rob Ryan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Kevin Spencer!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Rob Ryan!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Gwen Towbar and Tiny Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ryan shoots in but no luck this time.
Spencer stuffs the takedown.
Ryan doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Ryan shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Kevin Spencer has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Rob Ryan.
Ryan shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Spencer lands a jab followed by a nice looking cross.

Spencer shoots in and bounces Ryan off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Ryan has momentary wrist control but Spencer slips an elbow through the middle.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Ryan utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Spencer connects with a couple of short punches.

Spencer drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Spencer jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Ryan has momentary wrist control but Spencer slips an elbow through the middle.
Spencer won't allow Ryan to sweep him here.
Ryan looks gassed!
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Spencer accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Spencer lands a couple of elbows.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Ryan can do anything to dispel that myth.
Spencer with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Spencer working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Spencer is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Spencer throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Ryan works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Spencer postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.

Spencer thows a big elbow that misses.

Ryan is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Spencer has gone for a leg lock! Ryan slips out almost immediately though and dives into Spencer's guard.
Spencer wants to get back to his feet but Ryan is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Ryan trying to control but Spencer is working from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Ryan stands and throws Spencer's legs to the side, diving into side control.

Spencer is trying to escape and get back to his feet.

Ryan decides to stand back up. Ryan steps back and let's Spencer get back to his feet.
Ryan doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Spencer counters with a left and a right that stings Ryan.

Spencer closes the distance and pushes Ryan back into the cage.
The referee is keeping an eye on Ryan - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.
Ryan is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Spencer gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Ryan misses with a knee to the head.
Ryan drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Spencer gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Ryan fails to pull guard.

Ryan is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Spencer can't fight it off and eventually Ryan manages to take the fight to the floor. Spencer looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Spencer wriggles free and stands up.
Spencer tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Ryan swivels and escapes.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Spencer will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

and Spencer decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Ryan's guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Kevin Spencer dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Ryan takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.

Ryan closes the distance and clinches.
Ryan landing knees to the body. They look like they could hurt.
Ryan drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Spencer gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Spencer tries to score a body lock takedown but Ryan shows good agility there to stay on his feet.

Ryan drags the fight down to the ground.

Ryan is looking for a triangle but Spencer pushes his legs off easily.
Spencer has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Ryan wants to stand and escape but Spencer is having none of it.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Ryan will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.
Ryan is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Ryan looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Spencer passes into side control.
Ryan takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Ryan is looking for a sweep.
Spencer lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Ryan down.
Ryan is trying to improve his position.
Spencer landing a few strikes.
Ryan misses with an elbow from the bottom.

Ryan can't do much from the bottom here.

Spencer lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Spencer leaves Ryan with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Spencer lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.
Nice takedown defense from Ryan. No joy for Spencer on that attempt.

and Ryan takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Spencer scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Ryan tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Ryan sneaks back into half guard.
Ryan misses with some strikes from the bottom.
Ryan blocking the ground and pound attempt from Spencer.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Spencer thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Spencer connects with a nice short shot to Ryan's temple.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Kevin Spencer will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


Ryan has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.

Spencer gets caught flat footed, as Ryan shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Kevin Spencer overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Ryan prevents Spencer from getting back to his feet.

Ryan gets to his feet - Spencer follows without any prompting.
Ryan gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Spencer decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Ryan's guard.

Ryan working away from the bottom but not quite defensive enough there because Spencer has passed into half guard!
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Ryan wants to get back to full guard.

Spencer with the ground and pound but Ryan uses the opportunity to regain guard.
Ryan doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.

Ryan is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Spencer is aware though and is defending well.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Ryan is trying to keep Spencer in close.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Ryan is on top in guard.
Ryan cracks Spencer with a solid left hand.

Ryan has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Spencer is proving hard to escape from.

Ryan stands up over Spencer, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

Spencer pushes Ryan off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.
Kevin Spencer seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Spencer keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Ryan fails with a takedown attempt.

No joy there for Spencer, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Kevin Spencer is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Ryan changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Spencer tries to avoid it but Ryan manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Spencer to the ground. Spencer escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

and Ryan counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Ryan stands up and waves to Spencer to follow him.

and Spencer counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.
Rob Ryan has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Kevin Spencer is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Spencer stuns Ryan with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range.

And that's the end of the fight!
Rob Ryan comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Spencer has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
