PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Ethan Clayton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gene Carano (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Clayton's entrance music is I Want It All. A fine choice. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Gene Carano!
The judges for this bout are Jonathan Paton, David Schapiro and Chad Campbell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A jab from Clayton finds it's way through Carano's defenses.
Clayton dodges the punch combination from Carano.
Clayton avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Clayton's corner calls for a 1,2 combination and Clayton duly obliges.
Carano throws a head kick but Clayton moves out of range.
Carano is looking to land body kicks.
Carano wants to clinch up but Clayton keeps it at a distance.

and Clayton holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Clayton fails to pull guard.
Carano lands a knee to the head.


It looks like Ethan Clayton has been cut.
Carano with the Thai clinch. He's looking to land a big knee but he's not managed it this time.

Clayton has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Clayton's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
Carano must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Ethan Clayton just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.
Carano goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.

and Clayton counters with a three punch combo that has Carano backing up. Carano nods at Clayton to acknowledge the strikes.
Clayton misses with an uppercut. Carano saw that one coming.

Clayton clinches up with Carano and pushes him back against the cage.
Carano misses with a short punch on the inside.
Clayton jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Carano walks away with a smile on his face. Clayton gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Clayton digs a good body shot into Carano's ribs.
Carano misses with a double jab
and Clayton counters with a lovely shot to the body.
Carano tries to clinch but Clayton moves away
and Clayton counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Carano closes the distance but Clayton moves to the side
and Clayton counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Carano thinking.

Clayton moves into the clinch successfully.
Carano throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Clayton blocks it with crossed arms.
Carano misses with an elbow strike.

Clayton pulls guard successfully.
Carano would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Clayton wants to sweep but no luck.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Clayton managing to control the position.
Clayton lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Carano!

Carano is controlling an arm, preventing Clayton from taking his back. Although keeping him in mount is no better to be honest.

Carano clinches but Clayton breaks the clinch

and Clayton counters with a takedown into side control.
Carano wants to control but Clayton postures up.
Carano takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
Carano is trying to improve his position.
Clayton is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.

Clayton thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Carano struggling a bit here.
Carano tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Clayton wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Clayton looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.

Clayton tries for a kimura but Carano is defending well.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Clayton cracks Carano with a big right hand but Carano just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
Carano is not content to let Clayton control the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Carano is trying to escape and get back to his feet.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Carano is looking for a sweep.
The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.
Clayton lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Carano down.

Clayton wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Carano, who protects the arm well.

Ethan Clayton overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Clayton is working for what looks like an arm triangle here. Carano is trying to escape and Clayton transitions quickly into an armbar! He's slapped it on tight and Carano is forced to tap! Nice work there by Clayton! Very nice indeed!
