Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Dinsdale Piranha (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jim Cowen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jim Cowen has the power to score a knockout today if he connects clean with Dinsdale Piranha's chin.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Dinsdale Piranha!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jim Cowen!
The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, Yves DeLean and Alec Ball.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A lazy left from Piranha finds it's target.
Piranha is looking to land body kicks.
Piranha rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Cowen moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Nice sprawl there from Piranha as Cowen shoots in.
Cowen has a takedown stuffed.
Cowen shoots in for a double leg but Piranha sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Dinsdale Piranha has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jim Cowen.
Piranha swings for the body but Cowen moves out of range.
Piranha misses with the combination.
Piranha lands a head shot.
Cowen fails with a takedown attempt.

Cowen closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Cowen thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Cowen creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Piranha sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.

Cowen looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Cowen throws an elbow but Piranha slips to the side and avoids it well.

Cowen decides to stand back up.
Piranha stuffs the takedown.

Piranha misses the jab.
Piranha throws an overhand right that lands on Cowen's shoulder, as Cowen tries to avoid the shot.
Piranha misses with the combination.

Piranha scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Cowen doesn't seem bothered though.
Cowen swats away the attempt to clinch by Piranha.
Piranha misses with a straight right.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!
Piranha throws a body kick that misses.
Piranha throws a right and a left that Cowen avoids nicely.

Piranha gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Piranha wants to stand but Cowen is controlling the position.
Cowen has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Cowen looking to sit in guard and control but Piranha gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Piranha decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

Piranha scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.
Cowen shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Piranha pinned against the cage. Piranha gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Piranha throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Dinsdale Piranha is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Cowen closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Cowen has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Piranha is really trying hard to get back to his feet.

Cowen is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Piranha has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Piranha!

Cowen is trying to control the position but Piranha postures up.
Cowen bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Piranha's guard.

A close round but Jim Cowen will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


A decent looking cross lands there for Cowen.
Dinsdale Piranha seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Cowen has closed the distance and engaged Piranha in a clinch.

Piranha breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Piranha throws a body kick that misses.
Nice takedown defense from Piranha. No joy for Cowen on that attempt.

Cowen uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Piranha has time to react.

Cowen is breathing heavily.
Cowen is looking to advance position but Piranha won't allow it.
Cowen is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Cowen is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Piranha defends it well.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Cowen is stalling here. Piranha is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Cowen seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Piranha has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.

Piranha decides to stand up, so the ref orders Cowen to his feet.

Piranha lands with a slapping head kick.
Piranha is looking to clinch but Cowen is avoiding it.
Piranha displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Cowen.
Piranha tests Cowen's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Cowen is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Cowen tries for a takedown but Piranha sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Piranha slaps away a takedown attempt from Cowen, before circling back to the center of the mat.

With the two fighters working up against the cage, Piranha just misses with a elbow thrown towards Cowen's brow.
Cowen is trying to drag Piranha to the mat but Piranha just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Cowen lands a knee to the head.
Piranha has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.

Piranha breaks from the clinch.
Piranha misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Piranha throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Cowen.

Cowen drives through and clinches with Piranha against the cage.
Piranha on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.
Cowen goes for a takedown attempt but Piranha pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Cowen walks into a stiff left hand from Piranha.
Cowen moves out of range as Piranha throws a body kick.

Cowen shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Cowen was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Jim Cowen showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!

Cowen shoots for a takedown but Piranha saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Cowen's corner calls for a 1,2 combination and Cowen duly obliges.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Piranha clinches.
Cowen tries to pull guard but Piranha holds him up against the cage and eventually Cowen drops back down to his feet.

Piranha's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Cowen shoots in looking for a takedown. Piranha tries to sprawl out of it but Cowen keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Piranha manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Piranha bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Cowen's head backwards.
Cowen throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Piranha's waist but Piranha gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Cowen off to one side.
Piranha goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.
Cowen takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it.

No joy there for Piranha, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Cowen closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Piranha to the mat! Piranha manages to get full guard.

Cowen advances to half guard.
Piranha knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Cowen on the ground.
Cowen uses his free foot to push down on Piranha's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Piranha.

Cowen sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it!

You get the feeling that Piranha really doesn't like being in this position too much.
Cowen lands with some strikes.

Cowen looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.

Cowen goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Piranha is on top in guard.
Cowen wants to stand up but Piranha is controlling him.

Cowen escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Piranha gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Cowen tries to kick Piranha off but Piranha keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Dinsdale Piranha has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Cowen tries to get to full guard but Piranha has control of the leg.
Jim Cowen is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Piranha not landing any meaningful shots this time.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Dinsdale Piranha.
I think Cowen has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
