PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Meru Otonashi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dirk Kegslam (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Otonashi comes to the cage accompanied by Kuusou Rumba (GSZS OP1 Ver.). Dirk Kegslam told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Meru Otonashi!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Dirk Kegslam!
The judges for this bout are Emerson Jorge, Daniel Cesar and Felipe Paraventi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Otonashi throws an overhand right that lands on Kegslam's shoulder, as Kegslam tries to avoid the shot.
Kegslam throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Otonashi throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Dirk Kegslam seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Otonashi throws a nice outside leg kick.
Otonashi uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Kegslam.

It looks like Meru Otonashi has been cut.
Kegslam misses with a hook.
Kegslam takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.


It looks like Dirk Kegslam has been cut.
Kegslam moves out of range of the body kick from Otonashi.
Kegslam misses with a few strikes there.
Otonashi finds nothing but air with that leg kick attempt.
Kegslam misses with a series of wild punches.
Otonashi takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
Kegslam throws a jab when Otonashi was well out of range.
Kegslam takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Kegslam fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Otonashi manages to avoid it.
A lazy left from Kegslam finds it's target.
Kegslam thuds his right hand into Otonashi's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.

Kegslam misses with a hook. Otonashi ducked under it nicely.
Otonashi throws the kick towards the body but Kegslam avoids it.

Otonashi has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Otonashi there as he acknowledges the shot.
Kegslam missing with a left hand there. Otonashi was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.

Otonashi tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Kegslam was well out of range. Poor timing from Otonashi.
Otonashi is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.
Otonashi throws a low kick but Kegslam avoids it.
Otonashi takes a swing at Kegslam's ribcage but misses.
Otonashi's corner calls for a 1-2. Otonashi obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Otonashi.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Kegslam lands a nice hook to Otonashi's body. Otonashi takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.

Otonashi dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Kegslam. That did some damage!

and Otonashi counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.

Otonashi stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Kegslam swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Otonashi controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Kegslam can't keep his opponent in guard - Otonashi advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Kegslam won't allow Otonashi to pass to mount.

Otonashi missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.

Otonashi is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Kegslam sees it coming and defends easily.
Kegslam tries to get to full guard but Otonashi has control of the leg.
Otonashi throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

Otonashi is working for a kimura but Kegslam is defending it quite comfortably.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Otonashi trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
A looping hook to the body misses from Kegslam. Otonashi does a little dance to reset his feet.

The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Kegslam avoids the body shot from Otonashi.
Kegslam swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Otonashi lands with a nice body punch.
Otonashi throws a nice outside leg kick.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Meru Otonashi dominated that round.
Both fighters have cut men working on them during the interval.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Kegslam throws a body punch but Otonashi moves out of range.
Kegslam lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.
Otonashi thows a body kick. Kegslam tries to catch it but that hurt him.
Kegslam paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.

Otonashi thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Otonashi is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Otonashi throws an elbow but Kegslam slips to the side and avoids it well.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Kegslam tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Otonashi wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Meru Otonashi dominated that second round.
Both fighters have cut men working on them during the interval.
That's time! Otonashi's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!

Dirk Kegslam is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

and Otonashi counters with a leg kick that reverborates around the arena.
Otonashi fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Kegslam on the side of the head.
Otonashi will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Otonashi walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.
Otonashi throws a leg kick which misses Kegslam's front leg but catches the back leg as Kegslam tries to avoid it.
Meru Otonashi is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Kegslam is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Meru Otonashi showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Otonashi has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
