PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Louden Swain (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jimmy Nelson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Nelson has chosen AFI - Totalimmortal as his entrance music. Jimmy Nelson will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Louden Swain!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jimmy Nelson!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Tiny Johnson and Gwen Towbar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Swain misses with a body shot.
Jimmy Nelson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Nelson fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Swain, pushing him back against the cage.
Nelson swings away with an uppercut that misses.
Nelson misses with a hook to the ribs.

Swain has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Nelson uses from the top position.

Nelson trying to control the position from guard on top but Swain is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Swain working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Nelson doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Nelson manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Nelson is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Swain has escaped the position, nice work there.

Nelson looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.

Nelson tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Swain sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Nelson is looking to advance position but Swain won't allow it.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Nelson thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Swain's head.

Nelson seems to be looking for submissions.
Nelson working to pass to mount. He's got his hand pressing down on Swain's thigh. Swain counters though and makes it back to full guard.
Swain looking for a sweep. Not yet Swain, not yet.

Nelson drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Swain dives on top into guard.
Swain trying to control the position from guard on top but Nelson is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Nelson tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Swain works over Nelson with some ground and pound from guard.
Swain trying to control but Nelson is working from the bottom.
Swain is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Nelson is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Swain with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.

Nelson looking for a sweep. Not yet Nelson, not yet.
Swain trying to control but Nelson is working from the bottom.
Swain trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Swain postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.

Nelson looking for a guillotine here but Swain defends easily.
Swain is looking to stand up but Nelson won't let him.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Nelson is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Louden Swain dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

Nelson wants to clinch up but Swain keeps it at a distance.

Nelson shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Swain manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Nelson throws and elbow that misses. Swain uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Nelson's guard. Nice move by Swain!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Nelson looking to hit a scissor sweep but Swain is one step ahead there.
Nelson has momentary wrist control but Swain slips an elbow through the middle.

Swain working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Nelson is trying to control the position but Swain postures up.
Swain slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Sloppy strikes there by Swain.
Nelson tries to bench press Swain off him but Swain keeps the position.
Nelson defending against the ground and pound.
Nelson gets back to half guard.
Swain tries to stand but can't do so whilst Nelson controls his leg.
Nelson is not content to let Swain control the position.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Nelson won't allow Swain to pass to mount.
Swain is working hard here to advance position.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Nelson jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Nelson tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Swain paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Nelson scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard.

Nelson shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
Nelson trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Swain can't escape the position.

Nelson unloads with some shots from mount but Swain bucks and avoids them well.

Nelson goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Swain turns into him and now he's in Nelson's guard.
Swain won't allow Nelson to sweep him here.
Nelson is breathing heavily.
Nelson preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Swain wants to control from the top but Nelson keeps moving.
Nelson working a defensive guard but Swain passes into half guard.
Swain not landing any meaningful shots this time.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Nelson trying to hold on to Swain's head to control him but Swain postures up.

Swain is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Nelson regains full guard. Nicely done.
Swain is looking to work some ground and pound but Nelson has wrist control.
Swain stands and throws Nelson's legs to the side, diving into side control.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Nelson tries to buck Swain off but Swain is having none of it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Jimmy Nelson will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Swain walks into a straight right hand from Nelson.
Swain fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Nelson on the side of the head.
Nelson tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Swain paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Nelson drives through and clinches with Swain against the cage.
The pace really dropping off here, momentarily.
Swain is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Nelson gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
A head punch on the inside from Nelson fails to land.
Nelson is pressed up against the cage. Swain has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Nelson down to the mat. Nelson avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Nelson fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Swain manages to avoid it.
Swain ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Swain changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Nelson tries to avoid it but Swain manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Nelson to the ground. Nelson escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Louden Swain. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Swain needs to keep his hands up - Nelson had a free shot at his head there.
Nelson is looking to clinch but Swain is avoiding it.
Nelson tries to close the distance and clinch up but Swain swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Nelson scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.
Nelson has a takedown stuffed.

Nelson misses with a hook. Swain ducked under it nicely.
Nelson is looking to clinch but Swain is avoiding it.
Swain steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Nelson.
Swain looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Swain throws out a powerful jab.
Nelson swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Swain misses with a looping right.
Nelson on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.

Nelson forces Swain back against the cage and clinches.

Nelson works on Swain's body with a couple of short punches.
Swain has Nelson pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Nelson manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
Swain tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Nelson just stands there and leans against the cage.
Nelson content to slow the pace in the clinch.

Good body shot from Nelson.
Nelson lands a body punch in the clinch.
Nelson lands a nice uppercut.
Swain jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Nelson walks away with a smile on his face. Swain gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Nelson darts in and out, connecting with a jab.
Swain lands a two punch combo.
Swain takes one on the chin but keeps coming.
Nelson bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Swain's head backwards.
Swain cracks Nelson with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.
Swain avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Nelson throws a big shot that misses.
Nelson uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Swain.
Swain connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt.
Nelson throws out a loose jab but Swain uses good head movement to avoid it.
Swain ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Nelson looks to land a left hand but Swain moved out of range nicely.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Nelson lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Swain fails with the takedown.
Nelson fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Swain looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
Nice takedown defense from Nelson. No joy for Swain on that attempt.

Swain darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Swain sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Nelson defending well though.

Swain is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Nelson doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Swain.

Nelson has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Swain is working away from the top position though.

Swain is trying to work for a kimura but Nelson is defending well.

Jimmy Nelson comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Nelson has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
