PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Nick James (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Lu Bu (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Nick James!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Lu Bu!
The judges for this bout are Eliza Hachem, Hugh Johnson and Summer Carpenter.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
James thows a left - swing and a miss!
James lands the left hand.
Bu closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.
Bu dodges the punch combination from James.
Bu lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.

Bu feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Bu postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! James is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Bu, into his guard.
James tries to free his leg and advance position but Bu is retaining full guard.
Bu looking to hit a scissor sweep but James is one step ahead there.

James drops back looking for a leg! Bu is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Bu manages to kick James off! James jumps back into Bu's guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
James trying to control the position from guard on top but Bu is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Bu is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Bu checks a low kick. Bone on bone - not my idea of a good time.
James swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
A big right from James misses.
James throws a right and a left that both miss.
James throws an overhand right that lands on Bu's shoulder, as Bu tries to avoid the shot.

James scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Bu keeping hold of James's head, controlling as best he can.
Bu is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of James's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take James's back!
Bu is controlling the position but James somehow manages to roll and ends up with half guard.
Bu is looking to stall here but James recovers full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
James manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, James cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
James lands with some strikes.
Bu is trying to escape the mount.
James working the ground and pound effectively.
Bu is looking to get to half guard.
Bu wants to control but James is having none of it.
Bu looks gassed!
James controlling the position easily from mount.
James is landing with some decent strikes but Bu is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Nick James dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Bu fails with the takedown
and James counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Bu misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
A combination from James does no damage.
James throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

James is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Bu's half guard.

The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Bu has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. James is working away from the top position though.
James scoring with strikes to the body and head.
Bu is looking for a sweep. James is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Bu is breathing heavily.
James controlling the action here.
James looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
James is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
Bu has hold of James's hands but James slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

James seems to be working for a kimura but Bu defends the submission attempt.

Bu has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. James is working away from the top position though.
Bu won't allow James to pass to mount.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
James drops an elbow to the side of Bu's head.

James is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Bu sees it coming and defends easily.
James is keen to just control but Bu is a slippery customer.
James is controlling the pace.
James is looking to advance position but Bu won't allow it.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Bu wants to improve his position but James is controlling well.
Nice strikes from James there.
Bu slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
James wants to control from the top but Bu keeps moving.
James controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
James working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound.
James is stalling in the full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Nick James dominated that second round.
That's time! Back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


James throws a right and a left that both miss.
James lands a nice shot that snaps Bu's head back.
James lands a jab to the nose.
Bu swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Bu tries to clinch up
and James counters with a nice uppercut.

Bu closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
James is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Bu's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
James keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Bu throws a strike but James avoids it easily and moves to full guard.
Bu takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
James manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Bu manages to get himself to full guard.
James is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
James's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Nick James just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.
James tries to score a power double leg takedown but Bu sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten James somewhat.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from James.
Bu is looking to clinch but James is avoiding it.
Bu tries to close the distance and clinch up but James swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Bu shoots in looking for a takedown. James tries to sprawl out of it but Bu keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. James manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Bu fails with a takedown attempt.
Bu takes one on the chin but keeps coming.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
James scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard.
James darts in and out, connecting with a jab.
James tries to bum rush Bu with a series of wild strikes but Bu uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
James moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.

James changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Bu looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
James remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

James wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Bu, who protects the arm well.
Nick James is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

James tries to advance to mount but Bu denies him.
Bu tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but James wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Check out the look on James's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!
Bu struggling a bit here.
James staying calm.
Bu wants to get back to his feet.

And that's the end of the fight!
Nick James showed his dominance in that final round.
Well James has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
