PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Koo Von (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mark Challenger (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both fighters will be looking to make this an exciting fight for the fans, I'm sure!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Koo Von!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Mark Challenger!
The judges for this bout are Tatsuya Matsuyama, Shigeki Sano and Shirou Masuda.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Challenger gets a takedown into half guard.
Von controlling the leg, holding on to half guard.
Challenger is taking a breather. Von says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Challenger wants to take a breather but Von is having none of it.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Von keeping hold of Challenger's head, controlling as best he can.
Challenger is looking to pass Von's guard but actually Von recovers to full guard.
Von pulls Challenger in close to his closed guard and prevents Challenger from doing any damage or advancing position.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Challenger wants to control from the top but Von keeps moving.
Challenger has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Von is proving hard to escape from.
Von is adopting a defensive guard.

Challenger trying to stand up but can't free himself from Von's guard.
Von seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Challenger content to stall in guard here.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Von trying to keep a closed guard but Challenger is proving a slippery customer.
Von can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Challenger controls the pace.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Von wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

A close round but Mark Challenger will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



Von gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Challenger to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Challenger would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Challenger postures up.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Challenger trying to control the position from guard on top but Von is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Von pulls Challenger in close to prevent any damage.

Von has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Koo Von just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.

Challenger decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Challenger controlling the action here.
Von keeping control of the leg, stopping his opponent passing to mount.

Von wants to control but Challenger is keeping busy.
Challenger trying to control from Von's half guard. Von has other ideas though and has regained full guard.

Von controlling the position.
Von is trying to keep Challenger in close.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Challenger trying to control but Von is working from the bottom.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Challenger trying to stand up but can't free himself from Von's guard.
Challenger wants to control from the top but Von keeps moving.
Von is trying to control the position from the bottom.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mark Challenger showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Von doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Challenger counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Challenger.
Von goes for a takedown in the clinch but Challenger prevents it.

Challenger ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Challenger no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Challenger is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Challenger really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Von. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Von forces his way into half guard.
Challenger is trying to stand back up but Von is controlling him
Challenger is trying to get back to full guard.
Von wants to lay and pray for a moment but Challenger keeps working.

Von seems to be working for a kimura but Challenger defends the submission attempt.
Challenger wants to get back to his feet.

Von is working for a kimura but Challenger is defending it quite comfortably.

Von is working for a kimura here but Challenger manages to reverse the position and he's now in Von's guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Challenger is looking to advance position but Von has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!

Von jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Challenger is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Challenger and Von has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.

Von goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Challenger rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Von's guard! Nice work there by Challenger!

Von is trying to keep Challenger in close.
Von keeping moving, preventing Challenger from controlling successfully.
Challenger showing good wrestling skills to control the position.

Challenger wants to stand but Von has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Mark Challenger is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Challenger decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Von, up you get!
Koo Von is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Von misses with a takedown

and Challenger counters with a takedown into side control.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Koo Von. That's going to take a lot out of him.
You can see the frustration on Von's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Mark Challenger comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Challenger has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
