PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between John Colon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Frank Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Smith has chosen Redman - Da goodness as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, John Colon!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Frank Smith!
The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, George Francis and Frank Dennis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Colon fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Colon wants to clinch up but Smith keeps it at a distance.

Smith throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Colon was covering up waiting for the punch and Smith finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Smith has gone for a leg lock! Colon slips out almost immediately though and dives into Smith's guard.

Smith looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Colon wants to control from the top but Smith keeps moving.

Smith is looking for a triangle but Colon pushes his legs off easily.
Colon throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Smith works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Colon got a little sloppy there for a moment and Smith has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Colon has managed to get both his arms back between Smith's legs - danger averted.
Smith keeping moving, preventing Colon from controlling successfully.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Colon passes Smith's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Colon is keen to just control but Smith is a slippery customer.
Colon thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Smith's head.
Colon is looking to stall here but Smith recovers full guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Smith keeping full guard, as Colon tries to pass.
Smith controls Colon momentarily but Colon frees himself.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Colon trying to control but Smith is working from the bottom.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Colon ducks right into an uppercut from Smith.
Smith scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!
Smith will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Colon misses with a low kick.
Smith ducks under a wild hook from Colon.
Smith misses with a wild combination.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Smith misses with a takedown attempt - Colon sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Smith darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Smith thows a huge punch but Colon dodges it nicely.

Colon looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
Smith prevents Colon from improving his position.
Smith lands with a punch from half guard.
Smith sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Colon defending well though.
Smith is thwarting Colon's attempts to control the position.
Colon wants to get back to full guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Smith throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

Smith in half guard on the top. He's looking for a kimura... He's got it locked and he's managed to free his trapped foot. Colon tries to escape but it's on too tight and he has to tap! Great BJJ skills there from Smith!
