PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Aleksander Malyshev (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Matti Koskela (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Matti Koskela told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Aleksander Malyshev!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Matti Koskela!
The judges for this bout are Ben Zyskovitsi, Roosa Järviläinen and Anni Minnemäki.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Koskela lands a big head kick that sends Malyshev tumbling to the mat! Koskela takes a step backwards and waves Malyshev back to his feet - he wants the finish!


It looks like Aleksander Malyshev has been cut.

Koskela drives through and clinches with Malyshev against the cage.
Koskela tries to circle away but Malyshev has him pinned against the cage.
Koskela lands on the inside with an uppercut.
Koskela wants to get back to striking at distance but Malyshev won't allow it.
Koskela lands a glancing elbow in the clinch.
Koskela prevents a takedown attempt there.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Malyshev has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Koskela is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Koskela manages to break the clinch.
Malyshev shoots in but Koskela avoids the takedown attempt easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Aleksander Malyshev. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Koskela throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Koskela throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Malyshev.
Koskela moves in looking to clinch but Malyshev pushes him off.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Malyshev fails with the takedown.

Malyshev feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Malyshev slips nicely into half guard.
Koskela really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Malyshev. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Malyshev is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Malyshev slows the pace down in half guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Malyshev trying to pass the guard but Koskela defending well.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Malyshev is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Koskela is just riding it out for now. Malyshev eventually gives up the hold.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Malyshev seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Koskela does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Matti Koskela dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Aleksander Malyshev's cut.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.
Koskela tries to clinch but Malyshev is having none of it.
Koskela misses with the combination.
Koskela wants to clinch up but Malyshev keeps it at a distance.

Malyshev drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Malyshev passes to full mount! That's big trouble for Koskela!
Malyshev sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Malyshev is working to isolate an arm here. It's a telegraphed submission attempt but he's gone for it anyway - and he's got it! Malyshev extends the arm and Koskela is forced to tap!
