PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Gijs Groosman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Daton Everlast (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Gijs Groosman!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Daton Everlast!
The judges for this bout are Donatello Bradman, Eliza Hachem and Winston Howard.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Groosman digs a good body shot into Everlast's ribs.
Everlast throws a body punch but Groosman moves out of range.
Everlast ducks right into an uppercut from Groosman.

Groosman closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Groosman wants to free his trapped foot but Everlast is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Everlast tries to roll over but Groosman keeps him under control.
Everlast wants to get back to his feet.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Everlast can do anything to dispel that myth.
Groosman wants to take a breather but Everlast is having none of it.
Everlast is looking to improve his position.
Everlast wants to get back to his feet.
Everlast wants to improve his position but Groosman is controlling well.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Groosman throws a big shot that misses.
Groosman paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.

That's one minute gone in the round.
A telegraphed right hand from Groosman misses the target.
Nice takedown defense from Everlast. No joy for Groosman on that attempt.

Everlast has closed the distance and engaged Groosman in a clinch.
Groosman is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Everlast keeps control of Groosman as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

Groosman has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Everlast is trying to keep an underhook but Groosman manages to get the takedown into half guard.

Groosman looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Groosman is working for a submission of some sort.
Groosman wants to free his trapped foot but Everlast is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Groosman passes to full mount!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Groosman punishing his opponent with strikes.
Groosman lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Everlast hang on?
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Everlast is bucking up trying to escape but Groosman cracks him with another couple of good strikes.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Groosman tries to control but Everlast wriggling away.
Groosman is landing with some decent strikes but Everlast is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Groosman prevents Everlast from getting the reversal.
Everlast really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Groosman. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Groosman lands a big shot there that rocks Everlast but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.

Groosman swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Everlast is now in Groosman's guard. A big mistake from Groosman there, giving up the dominant position!
Groosman utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Groosman trying to keep a closed guard but Everlast is proving a slippery customer.

Groosman looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Groosman is breathing heavily.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Groosman is actively looking for submissions from his back. He's worked himself a little space on the bottom and seems to be going for a triangle. No, he's switched into an armbar! That was slick! Everlast rolls with it to try and escape but Groosman cranks on the arm and Everlast is forced to tap out! This one is aaaaaaaaall over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:26 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Gijs Groosman!
