PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Melvin Berg (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Heikki Mela (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Heikki Mela was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Melvin Berg!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Heikki Mela!
The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Roosa Järviläinen and Anni Minnemäki.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Mela decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

Mela throws a nice looking combination but Berg bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

and Mela counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Berg!

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Mela in particular looking to stall.

Mela stands up and beckons Berg to join him on the feet.

and Mela counters with a nice double leg into guard.

Mela tries to free his leg and advance position but Berg is retaining full guard.

Berg looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Mela has picked Berg up and slammed him! Berg can't keep hold of the triangle and Mela manages to pass to side control!

Mela wants to control but Berg is keeping him busy.

Mela decides to stand back up. Mela steps back and let's Berg get back to his feet.

Mela drives through and clinches with Berg against the cage.

Mela has clasped his hands together around Berg's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
Berg tries to improve position but can't.
Mela controls the position.
Mela trying to control the position but Berg is working away.

Berg is trying to control Mela's posture but Mela avoids it.
Berg is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Mela wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Berg, who protects the arm well.

Mela shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Berg knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Mela on the ground.
Berg tries to get to full guard but Mela has control of the leg.

Mela closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Berg is trying to get back to full guard.
Heikki Mela has got the better of the ground game so far.

Mela is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Mela is breathing heavily.

Berg wants to improve his position but Mela is controlling well.

Berg is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Mela pulls his head out easily.
Mela thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Berg's head.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mela works his way into side control.
Mela is looking to take a break and control but Berg is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Mela decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Berg moves out of range as Mela strikes.
No joy there for Mela, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Berg misses with a takedown

and Mela counters with a single leg into guard. Berg didn't expect that.

Berg has his foot on Mela's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Mela works his way back into a safe position though.
Mela is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Mela connects with a couple of short punches.

Mela postures up and lands a big shot to Berg's brow.

Berg wants to control but Mela is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Heikki Mela showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Berg tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Mela wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Mela works to advance to full mount. Berg defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Mela wants to control the pace but Berg is squirming around nicely.
Berg is in a horrible position here. Mela smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
Berg wants to control but Mela is having none of it.

Mela is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Berg is surviving well by controlling Mela's body position as best he can.
Mela has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Berg's face.
Berg is working to get back to half guard.
BOOM! Mela connects with a massive shot to the dome!
Berg is trying desperately to improve position.
Mela connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
A nice elbow there by Mela.

Mela stands up from the dominant position, so we're back on the feet.

Mela closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Berg to the mat! Berg manages to get full guard.

Mela slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Mela has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Berg!
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Mela is landing with some decent strikes but Berg is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
Melvin Berg has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Heikki Mela is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Berg tries to hold on but Mela pushes him away.

Heikki Mela comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Mela winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
