PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Ryu Hoshi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Yoshi Kamikaze (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Ryu Hoshi!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Yoshi Kamikaze!
The judges for this bout are Yasuomi Hirokawa, Yukihiro Shimada and Hirohito Nitta.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hoshi buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.

Kamikaze decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Kamikaze lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
Kamikaze has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Kamikaze decides to stand up.

Kamikaze scores a takedown into full mount!
Hoshi can't escape the position.
Hoshi tries to lock up and control but Kamikaze gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Kamikaze tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Hoshi tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Kamikaze controlling the position easily from mount.
Kamikaze avoids the attempt from Hoshi to control.
Hoshi slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Hoshi is looking for a sweep. Kamikaze is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Kamikaze is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Hoshi has managed to free his arm - good work.

Hoshi is looking to improve his position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Kamikaze controlling the pace.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Kamikaze stops Hoshi from getting back to his feet.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Nice takedown defense from Kamikaze. No joy for Hoshi on that attempt.

Kamikaze shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Hoshi is trying to defend but Kamikaze finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Kamikaze in particular looking to stall.
Kamikaze throwing shots but Hoshi is blocking nicely.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Kamikaze passes to side control.

Kamikaze has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
A nice combination there by Hoshi.
Kamikaze misses with a takedown
and Hoshi counters with a left and a right that stings Kamikaze.
Kamikaze looks gassed!

Hoshi shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Yoshi Kamikaze seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Kamikaze shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Hoshi napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Kamikaze stands up.

That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ryu Hoshi. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Hoshi tries to kick Kamikaze off but Kamikaze keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

Hoshi keeping hold of Kamikaze's head, controlling as best he can.
Kamikaze is pressing down on Hoshi's thigh, looking to free his foot. Hoshi is holding on for now.

Hoshi wants to improve his position but Kamikaze is controlling well.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Kamikaze in particular looking to stall.
Kamikaze blocks the strikes from Hoshi.
Kamikaze not doing much here.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Hoshi is trying to stand.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Hoshi flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Yoshi Kamikaze dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Kamikaze gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Hoshi counters with a three punch combo that has Kamikaze backing up. Kamikaze nods at Hoshi to acknowledge the strikes.
Hoshi is looking to clinch.
Hoshi doesn't manage to clinch there - Kamikaze circles away.
Kamikaze shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Hoshi counters by clinching up.
Kamikaze is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Ryu Hoshi has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Yoshi Kamikaze.

Hoshi wants the takedown. Kamikaze is fighting it off but Hoshi persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Kamikaze's guard against the cage.
Hoshi throws and elbow that misses. Kamikaze uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Hoshi's guard. Nice move by Kamikaze!
Kamikaze trying to control the position from guard on top but Hoshi is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Hoshi is pulling down on Kamikaze's head to control his posture.
Kamikaze is breathing heavily.
Hoshi is looking to stand up but Kamikaze isn't so interested in that idea.
Hoshi trying desperately to get back to his feet here but he's not having any joy at all. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful.

Hoshi looking to hit a scissor sweep but Kamikaze is one step ahead there.
Kamikaze stays in close to Hoshi's body and controls the position.
Kamikaze passes Hoshi's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Kamikaze controlling the pace.
Hoshi wants to improve his position but Kamikaze is controlling well.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Kamikaze passes to side control.
Kamikaze content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.

Kamikaze stands up.
Kamikaze doesn't succeed with the takedown
letting Hoshi counter with a right hand.
Kamikaze misses with a takedown attempt
and Hoshi makes the exchange count by landing a cracking kick to the body. Kamikaze really felt that one!

Hoshi takes the fight into the clinch.

Hoshi pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Kamikaze doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Hoshi counters with a left to the body.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Hoshi misses with a takedown attempt

and Kamikaze decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Hoshi's guard.
Hoshi looking for a sweep. Not yet Hoshi, not yet.
Hoshi is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Hoshi wants to stand but Kamikaze is controlling the position.
Kamikaze passes into half guard.
Kamikaze wants to control but Hoshi is keeping him busy.

Hoshi is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Kamikaze closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Hoshi is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

Kamikaze has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

Kamikaze gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Hoshi to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Kamikaze manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Hoshi manages to get himself to full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Yoshi Kamikaze showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Hoshi's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Kamikaze misses with a takedown

Hoshi has taken the fight to the clinch.

Kamikaze jumps guard and drags Hoshi to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Hoshi throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Kamikaze is pulling down on Hoshi's head. It's preventing any offense from Hoshi, at least for the moment.
Hoshi has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Kamikaze is proving hard to escape from.

Kamikaze looking for a guillotine here but Hoshi defends easily.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Kamikaze looking to hit a scissor sweep but Hoshi is one step ahead there.

Hoshi throwing strikes from guard but Kamikaze blocks nicely.
Hoshi has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Hoshi chips away with some ground and pound.
Hoshi wanted to stand there but Kamikaze had control of the position.
Kamikaze is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Hoshi throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.

Kamikaze feints and as Hoshi raises his hands in defense, Kamikaze changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Kamikaze gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
The fight stays on the outside here - Hoshi looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Hoshi shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Kamikaze counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.

Kamikaze is working for a submission of some sort.
Kamikaze wants to pass to mount but Hoshi is defending the position.
Yoshi Kamikaze has got the better of the ground game so far.
Kamikaze content to control rather than advance.
Hoshi is looking to improve his position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Kamikaze seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

Kamikaze stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.

Hoshi moves into range and clinches up with Kamikaze.
Hoshi is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Kamikaze pulls him back up using the underhooks.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ryu Hoshi. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Kamikaze is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Hoshi lands a knee to the head there! That was nasty!

Hoshi escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Hoshi lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.
Kamikaze ducks under a wild hook from Hoshi.
Kamikaze misses with a takedown
and Hoshi makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick.
Hoshi looks to clinch

so Kamikaze counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Kamikaze sitting in guard, not really doing much.
Hoshi controls Kamikaze momentarily but Kamikaze frees himself.
Yoshi Kamikaze is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Kamikaze slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Yoshi Kamikaze comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Kamikaze winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
