PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Edson Mendes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rodrigo Turtchin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mendes comes to the cage accompanied by Hard Hittaz by Three 6 Mafia. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

With a record of 6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Rodrigo Turtchin!
The judges for this bout are Edson Gomes, Leandro Rodrigues and Mauricio Rocha.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Turtchin just misses with a punch to the body.
Turtchin misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Mendes.
No joy there for Turtchin, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Mendes lands a high kick to the side of Turtchin's head that stuns him and send him tumbling down to the canvas! Mendes dives into guard, looking to finish.

It looks like Rodrigo Turtchin has been cut.
Turtchin tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Turtchin is still in real trouble! Can Mendes finish him?
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mendes trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Turtchin seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Mendes does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Turtchin is taking a breather. Mendes says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Mendes has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Let's hope that Turtchin has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Despite being in the dominant position, Rodrigo Turtchin just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Turtchin scores with a jab. Mendes acknowledges it with a nod of the head.
Turtchin is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Mendes.
Mendes takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it.

Turtchin takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Turtchin swings for the body but Mendes moves out of range.

No joy there for Turtchin, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Turtchin lands with an overhand left.
Turtchin fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Mendes manages to avoid it.

Mendes shoots in and bounces Turtchin off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Turtchin is trying to control the position but Mendes postures up.
Turtchin wants to sweep here but Mendes controlling him for the moment.
Turtchin manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!

Turtchin can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Mendes is looking to escape.
Turtchin pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Turtchin prevents Mendes from getting the reversal.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


A head kick misses from Mendes.
Turtchin will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Turtchin scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction.
Mendes shoots in for a double leg but Turtchin sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Turtchin throws a lazy right hand but Mendes sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
We are yet to see a takedown attempt from Turtchin in the fight. On paper you would think he is the more dominant ground fighter so let's see if these unusual tactics pay off.
Turtchin connects with a good right hand that stumbles Mendes. Mendes circles away out of range and recomposes himself.
Mendes jabs away that one connects to the head of his opponent.
Turtchin throws a series of punches but Mendes avoids them all with ease.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Mendes uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Turtchin.
Turtchin cracks Mendes with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Turtchin wants to break free but Mendes has control.
Mendes tries a knee to the head but Turtchin blocks it.
Turtchin is looking to break free of the clinch but Mendes has double underhooks.
Turtchin wants to break the clinch but can't.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rodrigo Turtchin showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Mendes shoots in looking for a takedown. Turtchin tries to sprawl out of it but Mendes keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Turtchin manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
