PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Rafael Vargas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Lucas Maua (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Vargas comes to the cage accompanied by O ultimo dos moicanos. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

The judges for this bout are Leandro Rodrigues, Felipe Paraventi and Paulo Santos.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Maua avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Maua.
Vargas tries to bum rush Maua with a series of wild strikes but Maua uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Vargas shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Maua counters with a nice double leg into half guard.

Maua is working for a submission of some sort.

Maua seems to be working for a kimura but Vargas defends the submission attempt.

Maua seems to be looking for submissions.
Maua seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Vargas is trying to maintain the position but Maua is very close to passing his half guard.
Vargas moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Vargas pulls Maua in close to his closed guard and prevents Maua from doing any damage or advancing position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Maua drops back looking for a leg! Vargas is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Vargas manages to kick Maua off! Maua jumps back into Vargas's guard.
Maua passes Vargas's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Vargas blocking the ground and pound attempt from Maua.

Maua is looking for a kimura but Vargas is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Maua to get the leverage.
Vargas knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Maua on the ground.
Maua looks gassed!
Vargas wants to improve his position but Maua is controlling well.
Vargas is pressing down on Maua's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Vargas will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.

Vargas is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Maua drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Maua jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

Maua with a flurry of punches that miss.
Vargas will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.
Vargas trying to keep a closed guard but Maua is proving a slippery customer.
Maua trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Vargas swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Vargas misses with a takedown attempt
and Maua counters with a body kick that stops Vargas in his tracks momentarily.
Vargas will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Maua checks a low kick from Vargas.
Vargas stalks Maua and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Maua's face. Maua staggers backwards, shaken.
Maua shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Vargas pinned against the cage. Vargas gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Vargas moves in looking to clinch but Maua pushes him off.

and Maua counters with a nice double leg into side control. Vargas won't be happy with that.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Rafael Vargas. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Maua cracks Vargas with a big elbow.

Maua has an Americana. Vargas didn't react quickly enough there and he's in big trouble now! He tries to squirm out but is forced to tap! Maua is delighted and gyrates in front of the ring girls. They seem to like the attention - it'll be interesting to see if Maua hooks up with any of them at the after show party.
