PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Syd Pepper (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and David Eads (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Eads has a niggling injury. He would have liked to come in 100% fit but that's not always possible. The fight MMA fans around the world have waited their entire lives for!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Syd Pepper!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, David Eads!
The judges for this bout are Cecil Peabody, Alan Glass and Tiny Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Eads throws a series of punches but Pepper avoids them all with ease.

Pepper bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Eads is looking for a sweep.

Pepper tries for a kimura but Eads is defending well.
Eads prevents Pepper from improving position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Eads trying to remain calm as Pepper controls from the top position.
Pepper seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Eads for as long as he can get away with.
Eads is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Pepper is controlling him well.

Pepper tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Pepper is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
Pepper could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Eads is not content to let Pepper control the position.
Pepper controls the position.

Pepper looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.

Eads is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Pepper is controlling him well.

Pepper looks up at the clock and then as Eads takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Pepper smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!
The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.
Eads is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Pepper staying calm.
Eads is trying to control Pepper's posture but Pepper avoids it.
Eads sneaks back into half guard.
Eads flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Eads throws a strike from the bottom that misses.
Eads tries to roll over but Pepper keeps him under control.
Pepper content to control rather than advance.
Pepper tries to stand and escape but Eads is controlling the position.
Pepper is thwarting Eads's attempts to control the position.
Eads looks like he's trying to stand up.

Eads makes some distance and scrambles quickly back to his feet. Nice work!
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Pepper shoots for a takedown but Eads saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Eads shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Eads gets caught flat footed, as Pepper shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



Pepper feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Pepper controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Pepper chips away with some ground and pound.

Pepper's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
Pepper knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Eads on the ground.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Syd Pepper just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.

Pepper fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Eads sprawls well initially but Pepper persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Pepper wants to free his trapped foot but Eads is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Eads is breathing heavily.

Pepper stands up and beckons Eads to join him on the feet.
Eads shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Pepper counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Eads wants to control but Pepper is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Pepper slows the pace down in half guard.
Eads manages to get to full guard.

Pepper won't allow Eads to sweep him here.

Eads wants to sweep here but Pepper controlling him for the moment.
Pepper might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Syd Pepper overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Pepper fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Pepper shoots for a double leg takedown but Eads sprawls well. He's pushed Pepper's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Pepper has managed to clinch.

Pepper breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Pepper shoots in and bounces Eads off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Eads can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Pepper controls the pace.
Eads not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Pepper tries to free his leg and advance position but Eads is retaining full guard.

Eads controls Pepper momentarily but Pepper frees himself.
Eads is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Eads blocks the strikes from Pepper.
Pepper is pressing down on Eads's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Pepper looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
Pepper has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Eads has passed into side control.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!



Pepper shoots in for a takedown and gets it.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Pepper decides to take the fight back to the feet.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Pepper.

Pepper stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Eads clinches but Pepper breaks the clinch

and Pepper counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Eads is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Pepper is stalling in the full guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Syd Pepper showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Pepper, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
