The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smeer fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Gaines misses with a head kick.

Smeer shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
Smeer unloading with bombs!

Gaines is rocked!
Gaines is working to get back to half guard.
Gaines tries to hold on but Smeer pushes him away.

Smeer has hold of Gaines's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Gaines manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

Smeer goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Gaines is on top in guard.

Smeer is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Gaines would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Gaines trying to control but Smeer is working from the bottom.

Smeer working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Gaines doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Gaines manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Smeer is looking for a triangle here but Gaines uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Smeer is actively looking for submissions from his back. He's worked himself a little space on the bottom and seems to be going for a triangle. No, he's switched into an armbar! That was slick! Gaines rolls with it to try and escape but Smeer cranks on the arm and Gaines is forced to tap out! This one is aaaaaaaaall over!
