PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Randy Griffin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jussi Viinamaki (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Viinamaki's choice of entrance music: Jope Ruonansuu - Juodaan Vodkaa. Jussi Viinamaki is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Randy Griffin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Jussi Viinamaki!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Viinamaki tries to clinch but Griffin moves out of range.

Griffin shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Viinamaki tries to roll over but Griffin keeps him under control.
Griffin not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Griffin throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Griffin is nestled in close to Viinamaki, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Griffin is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
Viinamaki blocking the ground and pound attempt from Griffin.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Viinamaki is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Griffin's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Griffin's back!
Griffin has the hand control, trying to stop the rear naked choke.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Viinamaki is trying to stick to Griffin's back but Griffin is turning into Viinamaki. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Viinamaki's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Griffin.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Viinamaki can do anything to dispel that myth.
Griffin throws a big right hand that misses.
Griffin connects with a couple of short punches.


It looks like Jussi Viinamaki has been cut.
Griffin prevents Viinamaki from getting back to his feet.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Viinamaki stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Viinamaki wants it to stay on the feet.
Griffin tries to clinch but fails miserably

and Viinamaki counters with a nice double leg into side control. Griffin won't be happy with that.
Griffin is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Viinamaki is looking to take a break and control but Griffin is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Viinamaki looks up at the clock and then as Griffin takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Viinamaki smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!


It looks like Randy Griffin has been cut.
Griffin pushes Viinamaki away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Viinamaki gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
Griffin is not content to let Viinamaki control the position.
Griffin avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Viinamaki.
You can see the frustration on Griffin's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
A bit of a lull in the action here.
Viinamaki just content to control the position.
Viinamaki fails to land a wild elbow strike.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Viinamaki controlling the position.
Griffin tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Griffin is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Viinamaki's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Viinamaki is thwarting Griffin's attempts to control the position.
Griffin tries to get to full guard but Viinamaki has control of the leg.
Griffin won't allow Viinamaki to pass to mount.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Viinamaki clinches but Griffin breaks the clinch

and Griffin counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Viinamaki!
Viinamaki is desperately trying to improve his position but Griffin has a good base and remains in mount.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Viinamaki sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.

Viinamaki is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Griffin is controlling him.
Griffin postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.

Viinamaki manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Griffin is wriggling around trying to escape.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Viinamaki avoids the attempt from Griffin to control.
Viinamaki is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Griffin can't stay in a position like this for much longer.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Randy Griffin will probably get the nod.
Both fighters have cut men working on them during the interval.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

Jeez, Randy Griffin's cut is really nasty now. The referee must be thinking about getting that checked.

The referee calls the doctor in to look at Randy Griffin's cut. Oh no, the doctor has called an end to the bout!
