PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Gabe Shade (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Cottoneye Joe (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Joe has chosen Cottoneye Joe as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Gabe Shade!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Cottoneye Joe!
The judges for this bout are Franklyn Lucas, John Roberts and Columbo Gatti.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Joe checks a low kick. Bone on bone - not my idea of a good time.

Shade scores with a takedown into Joe's guard.
Shade thows a big elbow that misses.
Shade tries to free his leg and advance position but Joe is retaining full guard.
Shade throws a strike but Joe rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Shade looking for a guillotine here but Joe defends easily.
Joe trying to control the position from guard on top but Shade is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Joe is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Shade is aware though and is defending well.

Joe has his foot on Shade's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Shade works his way back into a safe position though.
Shade has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Shade stands up over Joe, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Shade is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Joe wants to sweep but no luck.
Shade loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Joe manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Shade manages to get himself to full guard.

Shade thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Joe's head.
Joe is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Shade jumps into side control!

Shade gets to mount! Joe was on the offensive and wasn't defending properly.
Shade can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Joe is looking to escape.
Joe wants to control but Shade is having none of it.
Joe tries to reverse the position but Shade maintains control.
Shade trying to control but Joe is having none of it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Joe is desperately trying to improve his position but Shade has a good base and remains in mount.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Shade with the ground and pound from mount.
Joe is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Shade lands a heavy elbow.
Joe in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head.
Shade lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.


It looks like Cottoneye Joe has been cut.
Shade lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.
Shade fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!
Joe tries to lock up and control but Shade gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Joe is trying desperately to improve position.
Shade lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Joe hang on?
Joe is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The cut man is working on Cottoneye Joe's cut.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Shade fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Shade tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Joe paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Shade throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Shade dives in and grabs Joe's left leg, looking for a takedown. Joe pushes down on Shade's head and hops out.
Shade throws a leg kick but Joe checks it.
Shade moves in looking to clinch but Joe pushes him off.
Shade misses with a hook.
Joe looks to score with a jab to the body but Shade is just out of range.
Some bone on bone action there as Joe checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.
Shade tries for a takedown but Joe sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Gabe Shade. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Shade walks into a stiff left hand from Joe.
Joe feints and then cracks Shade's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Shade down.
Shade keeps the fight on the outside.
Shade on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.
Shade moves away from the strike by Joe.
Joe will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Shade avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Joe will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.

Joe tried to score with a low kick but Shade checks it.
Shade fails in his attempt to clinch.
Shade throws a leg kick but he was too far away and it doesn't land.
Cottoneye Joe is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Horrible takedown by Shade or perhaps it was just good defense by Joe which made him look bad.
Joe lands a two punch combo.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Shade feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Shade drops back, looking for a kneebar! Joe looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Joe looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Joe!
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Joe wants to control but Shade is keeping him busy.
Joe fails to land a wild elbow strike.
Joe misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Joe working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
Gabe Shade overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Shade tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Joe wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Joe wants to lay and pray for a moment but Shade keeps working.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
The fighters circle momentarily. Joe darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
Joe misses with a looping right.
Joe throws a chopping leg kick but Shade manages to avoid taking any serious damage.
A left lands for Joe.
Shade shoots in but no luck this time.
Joe throws a jab but it's blocked by Shade.
A looping hook to the body misses from Joe. Shade does a little dance to reset his feet.
Shade defending well as Joe loads up on a big left hand.
Joe looks to throw the jab but Shade is out of range.
Shade looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Joe is fending him off so far but Shade persists. Nope, Joe circles away and we're back to standing.
Joe ducks down and throws a hook to the body.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Joe has taken the fight to the clinch.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Shade blocks a punch to the side of the head.
Shade tries to land knees in the clinch but Joe avoids the damage to the body.
Shade drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Joe gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Shade tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Joe smiles and moves away.
Joe tests Shade's chin there with a solid looking shot.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Cottoneye Joe showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!



A jab-cross combination lands for Joe and sends Shade crashing to the mat! Joe follows him down to the mat - Shade regains half guard but he's not out of trouble yet!

Shade wants to improve his position but Joe is controlling well.
Joe working over Shade with some ground and pound. Shade looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Joe seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Shade is trying to get back to full guard.
Shade is working hard here to advance position.
Joe is just content to waste time from the top position. Shade takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Shade clinches with his opponent.
Joe lands a nice uppercut.
Shade blocks a punch to the side of the head.
Shade blocks an uppercut.
Shade tries to pull guard but Joe holds him up against the cage and eventually Shade drops back down to his feet.
Shade throws a hook to the body. More of an arm punch but it's all scoring with the judges.
Nice body punch from Joe - that landed with a thud.

Shade gets control of Joe's arms and successfully pulls guard. Shade will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

And that's the end of the fight!

I think Joe has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
