PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Kim Zhan Yung (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Spikey Norman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Fingers crossed for an exciting fight - I'm sure both fighters are looking for a nice under the table bonus!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Kim Zhan Yung!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Spikey Norman!
The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, Dillan Fox and Robert Douchet.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Norman avoids the head kick by Yung.
Norman tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Norman shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Yung manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Yung is adopting a defensive guard.
Yung can't keep his opponent in guard - Norman advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Norman thows a huge punch but Yung dodges it nicely.
Norman is trying to control the action in half guard but Yung is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Yung trying to hold on to Norman's head to control him but Norman postures up.
Yung is pressing down on Norman's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

Yung keeping moving, preventing Norman from controlling successfully.
Norman is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
Norman passes easily into side control. Nice work.

Norman tries for a kimura but Yung is defending well.

Norman tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Norman has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Norman is trying to move to mount but Yung reverses beautifully and ends up in Norman's guard.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Yung is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Norman tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Norman keeping moving, preventing Yung from controlling successfully.
Yung forces his way into half guard.
Yung is looking to take a break and control but Norman is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Yung is figuring out what he wants to do next.

Yung is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Norman is trying to get back to full guard.
Norman is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Yung is working for a submission of some sort.
Norman misses with some strikes from the bottom.

Yung is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Norman has managed to free his arm - good work.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Yung pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Yung throws a sloppy head kick

and Norman counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Yung tries to get to full guard but Norman has control of the leg.
Yung is breathing heavily.
Yung is in trouble now - Norman has advanced to mount!
Norman thowing shots but they're missing.
Norman looking to control but Yung is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Norman takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Norman rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Yung moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Norman misses with a few strikes there.
Yung misses with a takedown attempt

and Norman counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Yung's guard now.
Norman is pushing down on Yung's leg trying to pass to half guard. Yung is fighting to maintain full guard but Norman has managed to sneak the leg through.

Norman is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Norman is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!
Norman looking to control but Yung is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.

Norman goes for an armbar but Yung turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Yung.

Yung thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Norman's head.
The fighters are battling for position here. Norman manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Norman is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Yung wants to pass the guard but Norman is keeping the position.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Yung blocks a head kick by Norman.
Yung tries to clinch but Norman is having none of it.
Yung tries a head kick but it misses.
Norman fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

Norman closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Norman lands in his opponent's guard.

Norman postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Yung is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Norman, into his guard.

Yung drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Yung jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Norman is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Norman pushes Yung off and scrambles back to his feet.
Yung throws a series of punches but Norman moves out of range.
Yung fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Yung tries a head kick but it misses.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Yung fails with a takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Kim Zhan Yung. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Yung throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Yung plants his feet and lands a nice head kick!

Norman scores a takedown into full mount!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Norman is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Yung to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Yung shrugs it off.
Norman lands a big shot there that rocks Yung but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Norman cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Norman throws some wild stikes that Yung manages to avoid easily.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Norman goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Yung turns into him and now he's in Norman's guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Spikey Norman showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Norman has a takedown stuffed.
Yung shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Norman pinned against the cage. Norman gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Norman throws a head kick that misses.
Yung tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Norman throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Yung counters with a flying knee. Nice.
Yung tries for a takedown but Norman circles away easily
and Norman counters with a straight right hand.

Yung takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
Norman throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Yung.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!
Norman lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin.
Yung throws a lazy head kick
and Yung takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.

Yung looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Norman is fending him off so far but Yung persists. Nope, Norman circles away and we're back to standing.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Kim Zhan Yung. That's going to take a lot out of him.

and Norman counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.
Yung slips a jab and a cross from Norman.

Spikey Norman is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Norman looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Norman lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Norman.
Yung takes one on the chin but keeps coming.
Norman throws a right hand that Yung ducks under and follows up with a left that Yung also avoids with ease.

Norman closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Norman is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Yung knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Norman wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Yung, who protects the arm well.

Norman taking a break here but Yung is having none of it and regains half guard.

Norman looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Norman is looking to stall here but Yung recovers full guard.

Normanis looking to pass into half guard but Yung pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Yung is in guard.
Norman wants to get back to his feet but Yung is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Norman is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Spikey Norman has got the better of the ground game so far.
Yung trying to control the position from guard on top but Norman is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Kim Zhan Yung has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Spikey Norman is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

I would just about give that final round to Spikey Norman.
Well Norman has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
