PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between John Johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Renato Rua (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, John Johnson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Renato Rua!
The judges for this bout are Mauricio Rocha, Felipe Paraventi and Leandro Rodrigues.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rua tries to land a leg kick but Johnson saw it coming and moves away.
Rua pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Rua fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Johnson avoids it really well and circles away.
Rua throws a leg kick that misses.
Rua avoids a punch combination nicely.
Johnson keeps the fight on the outside.
A clash of legs there as Johnson blocks the low kick.
Rua throws a nice outside leg kick.

Johnson closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Johnson looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.

Johnson tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

Johnson tries to move into full mount but can't pass Rua's legs.
Johnson prevents Rua from escaping the position.

Johnson stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Rua throws a low kick but Johnson avoids it.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Rua with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.

Johnson closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Rua did well to prevent Johnson getting side control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Johnson is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

Rua is defending against the submission attempts here by Johnson.

Johnson is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Rua sees it coming and defends easily.
Johnson is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Rua is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Johnson's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Johnson's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Johnson throws a series of punches but Rua moves out of range.

Johnson on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Rua. Rua obviously looking to wear him down.
A slapping leg kick lands for Rua.
Some bone on bone action there as Johnson checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.
Rua buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.

A chopping leg kick lands by Rua.
Rua tries to score with a leg kick but it misses it's target.
Rua looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Rua turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
John Johnson is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Rua is looking to clinch but Johnson is avoiding it.
Rua shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Johnson counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Rua is trying to stand up here but Johnson is controlling him well.

Johnson throwing shots but Rua is blocking nicely.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Johnson trying to control the action but Rua is working from the bottom.
Johnson is taking a breather. Rua says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Rua looks like he's trying to stand up.
Rua is breathing heavily.
Johnson slips a nice elbow through Rua's hands, connecting with Rua's forehead.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Johnson working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Rua is refusing to be controlled, as Johnson sits in half guard.
Johnson is really struggling to control Rua but he's trying to hold on to the position.
Well, if Johnson is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Johnson wants to take a breather but Rua is having none of it.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Johnson in particular looking to stall.
Johnson has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

The referee stands the fighters back up. John Johnson just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.
Rua closes the distance but Johnson moves to the side
and Johnson counters with a body kick that brings a smile to the face of both fighters.

Johnson shoots in for a takedown and gets it.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Johnson seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Rua for as long as he can get away with.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!

Rua takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Johnson takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Rua is trying to escape but when you're mounted that's not too easy.

Johnson has hold of Rua's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Rua manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

Johnson looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

The referee stands the fighters back up. John Johnson just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.
A bone on bone clash there as Johnson blocks the leg kick.
Rua tried to score with a low kick but Johnson checks it.
Rua defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Johnson.
A punch combination from Rua misses.
Johnson tries to score a power double leg takedown but Rua sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Johnson somewhat.
Rua wants to clinch
and Johnson counters with a head kick.
Renato Rua has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
John Johnson is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

John Johnson showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Johnson has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
