PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Royce Gracie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jussi Kantola (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gracie comes to the cage accompanied by orion. Jussi Kantola acknowledges the crowd's support as he enters the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Royce Gracie!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jussi Kantola!
The judges for this bout are Chris Downing, Cecil Peabody and Alan Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Gracie scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Gracie trying to control the action but Kantola is working from the bottom.
Kantola tries to improve position but can't.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Gracie wants to lay and pray for a moment but Kantola keeps working.
Gracie working the ground and pound from side control.
Gracie throwing shots but missing, from side control.
Gracie has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Kantola wants to control but Gracie postures up.
Kantola tries to bench press Gracie off him but Gracie keeps the position.
Gracie working away.
Gracie working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
The strikes coming from Gracie are missing the target in this wave of attacks.

Gracie is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Kantola is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Gracie working away.
Gracie remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
Gracie working the ground and pound but he's contacting the mat, not the fighter.
Kantola is looking to regain half guard here but Gracie keeps moving and retains side control.
Kantola is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Gracie is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Kantola knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Kantola tries to bench press Gracie off him but Gracie keeps the position.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
You can see the frustration on Kantola's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Kantola forces Gracie back against the cage and clinches.
Kantola unloads a knee to the mid-section. Gracie lets out a prehistoric sounding urrrrgh.
Kantola is stalling here. The referee will be looking to step in if he doesn't pick up the pace.

It looks like Royce Gracie has been cut.

Kantola is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.

Kantola has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Gracie uses from the top position.
Kantola manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Gracie is breathing heavily.
Kantola is looking to stand but Kantola has his arms wrapped tightly around him, looking to prevent the damage.

Gracie manages to regain half guard. Good work.
Kantola seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.

Gracie makes his way to full guard, as Kantola worked for a kimura.

Gracie is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Kantola wants to control from the top but Gracie keeps moving.

Gracie working away from the bottom but not quite defensive enough there because Kantola has passed into half guard!
Kantola looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Gracie with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Kantola wants to free his trapped foot but Gracie is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Gracie has hold of Kantola's hands but Kantola slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Royce Gracie will probably get the nod.
The cut man is working on Royce Gracie's cut.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!


Kantola misses with a wild combination.

and Gracie counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Kantola bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Gracie's guard.
Kantola passes into half guard.

Kantola is looking for a kimura but Gracie is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Kantola to get the leverage.
Gracie is refusing to be controlled, as Kantola sits in half guard.
Kantola might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Gracie kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Gracie works his way to full guard. Good work.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Kantola stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Gracie swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Gracie working for a triangle but Kantola defends it easily.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Gracie looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Kantola loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Kantola is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Kantola slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Kantola pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Gracie is keeping the position for now.
Kantola throwing strikes but missing.

Gracie isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Kantola stacks Gracie on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Kantola!
Kantola wants to control but Gracie is keeping him busy.
Gracie tries to buck Kantola off but Kantola is having none of it.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Kantola wants to lay and pray for a moment but Gracie keeps working.
Gracie is looking for a sweep.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Kantola lands with a slapping head kick.
Kantola is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Kantola tries to clinch there but Gracie circles away.

Kantola moves into range and clinches up with Gracie.
Gracie stops a takedown attempt from Kantola.
Gracie jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Kantola walks away with a smile on his face. Gracie gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Gracie throws a sloppy head kick
and Kantola makes the exchange count by landing a cracking kick to the body. Gracie really felt that one!

Kantola is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Gracie's half guard.

Gracie is refusing to be controlled, as Kantola sits in half guard.
Kantola wants to pass the guard but Gracie is defending well.
Royce Gracie overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Gracie is not content to let Kantola control the position.

Kantola is working for a submission of some sort.
Kantola trying to control the action but Gracie is working from the bottom.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jussi Kantola showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The cut man is working on Royce Gracie's cut.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Gracie throws a left and a right that both miss
and Kantola counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.

Gracie shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

Kantola is actively looking for submissions from his back. He's worked himself a little space on the bottom and seems to be going for a triangle. No, he's switched into an armbar! That was slick! Gracie rolls with it to try and escape but Kantola cranks on the arm and Gracie is forced to tap out! This one is aaaaaaaaall over!
