PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Robert Wiltsie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rich Melado (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Wiltsie kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genuis that is Mein Herz Brennt. Robert Wiltsie has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Robert Wiltsie!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Rich Melado!
The judges for this bout are Chris Downing, Robert Twigg and Cecil Peabody.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Melado throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Wiltsie's waist but Wiltsie gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Melado off to one side.

Wiltsie gets a takedown into half guard.

Melado looking for submissions from an awkward position here.
Melado is trying to get back to full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Wiltsie is looking to take a break and control but Melado is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Melado trying to hold on to Wiltsie's head to control him but Wiltsie postures up.
Wiltsie controlling the action here.

Melado looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.

Wiltsie is trying to work for a kimura but Melado is defending well.
Melado tries to kick Wiltsie off but Wiltsie keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Wiltsie shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Melado clinches.
Melado tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Wiltsie just stands there and leans against the cage.
Melado lands a nice looking hook to the body, against the cage.
Wiltsie lands a hook that snaps the head of Melado backwards.
Wiltsie's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.

Melado breaks the clinch.
Wiltsie tries to clinch there but Melado circles away.

Wiltsie looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Melado!
A nice elbow there by Wiltsie.
Melado really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
Wiltsie looking to ground and pound his opponent to a finish here.
Melado is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Wiltsie has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Melado looks gassed!

Melado tries to strike from the bottom but he's left himself exposed and Wiltsie has taken his back.

Wiltsie working for a RNC but it's not happening just yet.
Melado rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.

Wiltsie is working for a kimura but Melado is defending it quite comfortably.
Melado flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
Melado is trying to get back to full guard.

Melado with the active half guard here but Wiltsie passes nicely into side control.
Melado tries to buck Wiltsie off but Wiltsie is having none of it.
Melado is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Wiltsie cracks Melado with a big right hand but Melado just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
Melado is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Wiltsie has just dragged him back down to the mat.
Melado manages to work his way to half guard, despite Wiltsie's best efforts.
Melado is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Wiltsie's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Wiltsie's back!

Melado looking to break Wiltsie's wrist control so he can sink in the choke. Wiltsie remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise Melado will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke!

Melado is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Wiltsie knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Wiltsie for a finish.
Wiltsie grimaces as he takes a shot to the body.
Wiltsie is taking damage to the body and head.

Wiltsie is staying cool under pressure, defending well against the rear naked choke attempt from his opponent.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Melado looking for the choke but no joy.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Wiltsie has his hands over his head blocking the strikes from Melado.

Wiltsie covers up after that shot from Melado.

Melado is remaining active here, looking for the choke. The more discerning members of the crowd will appreciate his efforts.
Wiltsie is being controlled on the ground here - he must escape this position otherwise surely the end is near.
Melado tries to get the hooks in deep but Wiltsie pushed the leg off.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Melado softening up his opponent with strikes here.
Wiltsie is covering up but some of the strikes from Melado are getting through and doing damage.

Melado is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Wiltsie defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined.
Watch the back of the head! Comes the shout from the referee towards Melado.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rich Melado dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Wiltsie changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Melado tries to avoid it but Wiltsie manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Melado to the ground. Melado escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Wiltsie shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Wiltsie shoots in and bounces Melado off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Melado wants to sweep but no luck.
Melado trying to strike off his back.

Melado looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Melado is trying to control the position but Wiltsie postures up.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Melado is on top in guard.
Wiltsie trying to keep a closed guard but Melado is proving a slippery customer.
Melado slips nicely into half guard.

Melado is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Wiltsie wants to control but Melado is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Rich Melado has got the better of the ground game so far.

Melado passes Wiltsie's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Wiltsie trying to hold on to Melado's head to control him but Melado postures up.

Melado is working for a submission of some sort.
Wiltsie works his way to full guard. Good work.
Wiltsie looking for a sweep. Not yet Wiltsie, not yet.
Wiltsie lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Melado!
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Melado is desperately trying to get back to half guard.

Wiltsie looking for a guillotine from mount but Melado is having none of it.

Melado is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Wiltsie wants to control the pace but Melado is squirming around nicely.
Wiltsie takes Melado's back. Could be looking for a rear naked choke here - either way, Melado is in trouble.
I really don't envy Melado right now.

Wiltsie has the rear naked choke here! This is very bad for Melado! Can he survive? No! He's out! Wiltsie gets to his feet and celebrates with his cornermen. He looks absolutely delighted. In the post fight interviews he takes time to thank his parents and everyone who has believed in him from the start. How sweet.
