PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Dean Ragno (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Steve Johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Johnson has chosen Strength Within as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. On his way into the cage it seems that Dean Ragno has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Dean Ragno seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Dean Ragno!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Steve Johnson!
The judges for this bout are Eddie Farnsworth, David Schapiro and Reed Andrews.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ragno looks to land a right hand but Johnson moved out of range.

Ragno gets caught flat footed, as Johnson shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Ragno tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Johnson tries to free his leg and advance position but Ragno is retaining full guard.
Johnson wants to control from the top but Ragno keeps moving.
Johnson looking to pass the guard.
Johnson must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Ragno has Johnson pulled in close to control his posture.
Ragno trying to keep a closed guard but Johnson is proving a slippery customer.
Johnson is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Johnson working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Ragno avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Ragno looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Johnson thows a big elbow that misses.
Johnson trying to control the position from guard on top but Ragno is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Ragno is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Johnson with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Johnson looking to sit in guard and control but Ragno gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Johnson utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Ragno is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Johnson can do anything to dispel that myth.

Johnson is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Ragno throwing strikes from guard but Johnson blocks nicely.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Johnson is trying to keep Ragno in close.
Ragno content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
Johnson keeping moving, preventing Ragno from controlling successfully.
Johnson working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Ragno.
Ragno has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Ragno tries for a takedown but Johnson circles away easily

and Johnson counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Ragno's guard now.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Ragno is breathing heavily.
Ragno wants to sweep here but Johnson controlling him for the moment.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Johnson accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Ragno looking to control.
Johnson is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Johnson wants to control from the top but Ragno keeps moving.
Johnson is looking to work some ground and pound but Ragno has wrist control.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Ragno misses with a takedown attempt

and Johnson counters with a single leg into guard. Ragno didn't expect that.

Johnson slips nicely into half guard.
Oh Ragno is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!

Johnson lands a big elbow from half guard. That looks like it's hurt Ragno quite badly. Ragno pulls Johnson in close trying to recover. Johnson postures up and lands two really hard shots that put Ragno on queer street! The ref takes a look and decides to call an end to the fight! Possibly an early stoppage but Ragno doesn't seem to be complaining too much.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:28 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Steve Johnson!
