PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Frank Mir (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jeff Thorn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mir kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Spoilin For A Fight . These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Frank Mir!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 1 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, Jeff Thorn!
The judges for this bout are Bruno Hogan, Hugh Johnson and John Mangel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mir takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Thorn keeps the fight on the outside.
Thorn lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.
Mir shoots in for a double leg but Thorn sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Mir scores a takedown into full mount!
Mir misses with a head shot.
Poor strikes thrown by Mir there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!
Thorn wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Mir.
Thorn tries to buck Mir off but he can't manage it.
Mir looking to ground and pound but Thorn is blocking nicely.

Mir goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Thorn turns into him and now he's in Mir's guard.

Mir is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Thorn got a little sloppy there for a moment and Mir has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Thorn has managed to get both his arms back between Mir's legs - danger averted.
Thorn must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Thorn wants to control from the top but Mir keeps moving.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Mir throws his legs up looking for a submission but Thorn uses it to pass to side control.
Mir manages to get back to half guard.
Mir wants to sweep but Thorn has passed to side control!
Thorn wants to lay and pray for a moment but Mir keeps working.
Mir is trying to improve his position.
Mir can't do much from the bottom here.

Mir has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Thorn throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Mir sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Mir is trying hard to land a takedown here. Thorn sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Thorn has used his reach advantage pretty well so far tonight.

Mir looks to land a combination but Thorn avoids it well.

Thorn scores with a decent looking hook.
Mir misses with a jab, cross combination.
Thorn tries to bum rush Mir with a series of wild strikes but Mir uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Mir looks to land a left hand but Thorn moved out of range nicely.
Mir ducks under a wild hook from Thorn.
Mir shoots for a takedown but Thorn saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Thorn. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.
Mir throws a lazy right hand but Thorn sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Thorn scores with a crisp jab that stopped Mir in his tracks.
A punch lands to the side of Mir 's head but he takes it in his stride.
Thorn might want to mix his strikes up a bit more. He's just going for head shots at the moment and that can become a bit predictable.

Jeff Thorn seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Mir ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Mir misses with a body kick.

Mir throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Thorn was covering up waiting for the punch and Mir finishes the takedown easily into guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mir stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Thorn swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Thorn is pulling down on Mir's head to control his posture.

Mir postures up and lands a big shot to Thorn's brow.

Mir is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Thorn wants to stand but Mir is controlling the position.

Mir might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Mir missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.

Mir swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Thorn cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

A close second round but Jeff Thorn will probably get the nod - 10:9.

and Thorn counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.

It looks like Jeff Thorn has been cut.
Mir wants to control the pace but Thorn is squirming around nicely.
Mir throwing strikes but Thorn bucks up and reverses the position. He's now in guard on top.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Mir is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! Thorn has his hands clasped together but Mir extends an breaks Thorn's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Mir.
