Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Ed Nelson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Felipe Alves (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Nelson comes to the cage accompanied by Stephen Lynch - Special Ed. Alves has chosen Bob Marley - Get Up Stand Up as his entrance music. I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Felipe Alves!
The judges for this bout are Mauricio Rocha, Alexandre Firmino and Paulo Santos.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nelson throws a shot from downtown. Alves moves away and avoids it.
Alves keeps the fight on the outside.
Alves lands a right hook to the body.
Alves misses with a double jab.
Nelson ducks under a wild hook from Alves.
Nelson throws a hook but Alves blocks it.
Nelson thows a left - swing and a miss!
Alves moves away from the strike by Nelson.
Nelson avoids the body shot from Alves.
Nelson shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Alves but Alves pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Nelson thuds his right hand into Alves's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
Alves lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.
Alves lands with a shot to the body.
Alves steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Nelson.
Alves throws a nice looking combination but Nelson bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

It looks like Ed Nelson has been cut.
Nelson moves away from the strike by Alves.
Alves misses with the combination.
A looping hook to the body misses from Alves. Nelson does a little dance to reset his feet.

Alves fails to land with a series of punches.
Alves scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent.
Nelson takes a swing at Alves's ribcage but misses.
Alves needs to keep his hands up - Nelson had a free shot at his head there.
Felipe Alves seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Alves throws a lazy right hand but Nelson sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.

Nelson pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
Alves throws a body punch but Nelson moves out of range.
Nelson misses with a takedown attempt - Alves sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Nelson misses with a hook. Alves ducked under it nicely.
Alves will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Alves throws the left hand but Nelson avoids the punch easily.
The fighters circling - Alves throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Alves misses with a wild body shot.
Nelson lands a two punch combo.
Nelson looks to throw the jab but Alves is out of range.
Nelson takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.
Nice body punch from Nelson.

Alves misses with a double jab

and Nelson counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Alves isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Nelson stacks Alves on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Nelson!

Nelson working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

Nelson is looking to take a break and control but Alves is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Nelson wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Alves, who protects the arm well.
Alves tries to bench press Nelson off him but Nelson keeps the position.
Alves is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Nelson is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Alves's shoulder. That is not cool.
Alves wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!

Nelson wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Alves, who protects the arm well.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Alves is looking to regain half guard here but Nelson keeps moving and retains side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Ed Nelson will probably get the nod.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


A right-left combo lands from Alves.
Alves avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Alves digs a good hook to Nelson's body.
Alves ducks under a wild hook from Nelson.
Alves swings for the body but Nelson moves out of range.
Alves misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Alves takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Alves throws a combination that misses
and Nelson counters with a stiff right hand.
Alves ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Felipe Alves is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Alves gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Nelson.

and Nelson counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Nelson slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Nelson has knee on belly and moves into mount.
Nelson trying to control but Alves is having none of it.
Nelson sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Alves really trying hard to get back to half guard here.

Nelson swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Alves is now in Nelson's guard. A big mistake from Nelson there, giving up the dominant position!
Alves must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Nelson manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Alves manages to get himself to full guard.
Nelson controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Nelson is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Alves escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Nelson gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Alves has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Nelson is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Alves.
Alves is looking to regain half guard here but Nelson keeps moving and retains side control.

Nelson wants to control but Alves is keeping him busy.
Alves is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Nelson passes to full mount! That's big trouble for Alves!
Alves prevents Nelson from taking his back.
Alves tries to improve his position but instead Nelson has taken his back!

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Nelson is looking to control Alves but Alves is wriggling around and keeping busy.
Nelson throwing strikes from the back - he gets a warning from the referee for striking the back of the head but all these shots are hurting Alves!
The referee is taking a good look at Alves as he is on the wrong end of some big shots from Nelson!

Alves is in a world of trouble here. He's outmatched on the ground here and he'd better get Nelson off his back sharpish unless he wants to be submitted.

Alves throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Nelson sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Alves throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Alves throws a right and a left that both miss.
Alves misses with a double jab.
Nelson showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Alves.
A telegraphed right hand from Nelson misses the target.
Alves uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Alves rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Nelson moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Nelson slips under a jab from Alves.
Nelson shoots in for a takedown but Alves shows good takedown defense.
Nelson throws a good cross that connects.

Nelson scores with a jab. Alves acknowledges it with a nod of the head.

Alves lands with an uppercut that bounces Nelson off the cage and back into rage.
Alves closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.

Nelson shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Nelson sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Alves's guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Alves gets full guard.

Alves has his foot on Nelson's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Nelson works his way back into a safe position though.
Alves takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Alves throws some sloppy strikes off his back.
Alves keeping moving, preventing Nelson from controlling successfully.
Nelson wants to pass the guard but Alves is keeping the position.
Nelson passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Nelson is looking to take a break and control but Alves is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Alves stops Nelson from passing to mount.

Nelson is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Alves has escaped the position, nice work there.
Alves is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Nelson is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Alves will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Alves is looking for a sweep.
Alves manages to work his way to half guard, despite Nelson's best efforts.
Still in half guard, Nelson seems content to control.
Alves manages to get to full guard.
Alves can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Nelson controls the pace.
Ed Nelson is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Ed Nelson.
Alves misses with an uppercut.

And that's the end of the fight!
Ed Nelson showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Nelson, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
