PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Runar Mathisen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jimmy Myers (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Runar Mathisen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Jimmy Myers!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Myers tries a head kick but it misses.
The fight stays on the outside here - Myers looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Mathisen tries to close the distance and clinch up but Myers swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Mathisen tries to clinch up but Myers circles away and keeps his distance.
Mathisen dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Myers. That did some damage!

Mathisen throws a knee to the head but misses.
Myers tries to score a body lock takedown but Mathisen shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Myers jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Mathisen walks away with a smile on his face. Myers gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Mathisen fails with an attempt to clinch.
Mathisen walks into a jab.
Myers tries to clinch there but Mathisen circles away.

Mathisen takes the fight into the clinch.
Myers tries to pull guard but Mathisen won't allow it.
Runar Mathisen has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jimmy Myers.

Mathisen gets control of Myers's arms and successfully pulls guard. Mathisen will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Myers won't allow Mathisen to sweep him here.

Mathisen not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Mathisen is trying to keep Myers in close.
Myers stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Mathisen swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Myers seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Myers looks to score with a jab to the body but Mathisen is just out of range.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Mathisen closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Mathisen stalling here - the referee won't stand for too much of that.
Mathisen tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Myers just stands there and leans against the cage.
Myers wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Mathisen has him pressed against the cage.

Mathisen manages to break the clinch.
Myers changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Mathisen tries to avoid it but Myers manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Mathisen to the ground. Mathisen escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Mathisen slaps away a takedown attempt from Myers, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Mathisen displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Myers.
Mathisen wants to clinch.
Myers goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.

Myers stuffs the takedown.
Myers swats away the attempt to clinch by Mathisen.
Myers tries to score a power double leg takedown but Mathisen sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Myers somewhat.
Runar Mathisen seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Myers closes the distance and pushes Mathisen back into the cage.
Mathisen gets an overhook and lands an elbow to the side of the head.
Mathisen throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Myers blocks it with crossed arms.
Myers jumps guard but Mathisen stands there with Myers around his waist. Myers gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Mathisen escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Myers shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Mathisen but Mathisen pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Mathisen takes one on the button.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Myers circles away from the clinch attempt.
Myers looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Myers shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Mathisen as he jumps to the side.
Myers looks gassed!

Mathisen gets a clinch.

Mathisen breaks the clinch.
Myers keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Mathisen doesn't manage to clinch there - Myers circles away.
Myers clinches but Mathisen breaks the clinch
and Mathisen counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Myers is lucky that one didn't land flush.

so Myers counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jimmy Myers dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Horrible takedown by Mathisen or perhaps it was just good defense by Myers which made him look bad.

Mathisen has managed to clinch.
Kneeeeees! The crowd are calling for knees to the body. Mathisen obliges.
Mathisen has Myers pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Myers manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
Myers drops down looking for an ankle pick but Mathisen pulls his leg out and moves away.

Myers is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Mathisen is looking to control Myers's arms but Myers gets an underhook and turns him. Now Mathisen has his back to the cage.
Mathisen tries a knee to the head but he's missed.
Myers has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Mathisen is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Myers walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Mathisen checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side.

and Myers holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Mathisen is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Myers is defending well for now.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Mathisen tries to score a body lock takedown but Myers shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Myers tries to pull guard but Mathisen holds him up against the cage and eventually Myers drops back down to his feet.
Myers's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.

Myers stands up from Mathisen's guard - Myers perhaps looking for a knockout.
Mathisen shoots in looking for a takedown. Myers tries to sprawl out of it but Mathisen keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Myers manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Myers scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.

Myers seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

Jimmy Myers showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Mathisen can't seem to implement his control oriented gameplan at the moment. That's no bad thing of course, for those of us who want to see a good fight.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Myers slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Myers decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Mathisen, up you get!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Mathisen gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Jimmy Myers is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Mathisen wants to sweep here but Myers controlling him for the moment.

Well Myers has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
