PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Justin Gabriel (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Forrest Nickells (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gabriel's ring entrance music is that housewives' favourite, Get Out Of My Room. Nickells is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Kayne West - Stronger. Justin Gabriel is staring across the cage at his opponent, tweaking his nipples... Tweaking his own nipples that is.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Justin Gabriel!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Forrest Nickells!
The judges for this bout are Damien Edna, Summer Carpenter and John Mangel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Nickells shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Gabriel napping and manages to drive through into side control!
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Nickells content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.
Nickells is looking to take a break and control but Gabriel is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Nickells controls the position.

Nickells is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Gabriel is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Nickells just content to control the position.
Gabriel tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Nickells controlling the position from side mount.
Gabriel struggling a bit here.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.
Gabriel is trying to control Nickells's posture but Nickells avoids it.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Gabriel is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Nickells has just dragged him back down to the mat.
Gabriel is trying to escape the position but Nickells is controlling the position.
Gabriel could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Despite being in the dominant position, Forrest Nickells just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Gabriel is breathing heavily.
Gabriel lands a nice looking body shot.

Gabriel drives through and clinches with Nickells against the cage.
Gabriel is trying to force a seperation but Nickells has the dominant position.

Nickells gets a trip takedown into half guard.

Gabriel throws a strike from the bottom that misses.
Nickells takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Gabriel gets back to full guard.
Nickells is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Gabriel wants to get back to his feet but Nickells is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Gabriel might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Despite being in the dominant position, Forrest Nickells just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Nickells feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Forrest Nickells dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



Gabriel closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Nickells can't do much from the bottom here.
Gabriel tries to stand but Nickells is controlling his head.
Gabriel wants to lay and pray for a moment but Nickells keeps working.
Gabriel tries to land with some ground and pound but misses.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Gabriel throwing strikes but missing, from side control.
Nickells avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Gabriel.
Nickells is looking for a sweep.

Gabriel goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Nickells rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Gabriel's guard! Nice work there by Nickells!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Nickells content to stall in guard here.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Nickells's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Let's hope that Nickells has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Nickells looking to sit in guard and control but Gabriel gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

so Gabriel counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Gabriel makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.

That's time! Gabriel's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!

Gabriel throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Gabriel wants to take a breather but Nickells is having none of it.
Nickells is concentrating on defense, preventing Gabriel from advancing position.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Gabriel is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.

Gabriel wants to free his trapped foot but Nickells is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Gabriel is pressing down on Nickells's thigh, looking to free his foot. Nickells is holding on for now.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Gabriel is trying to control the action in half guard but Nickells is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Nickells shoots and misses
and Gabriel counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Nickells is lucky that one didn't land flush.

Gabriel fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Nickells, pushing him back against the cage.

Nickells wants the takedown. Gabriel is fighting it off but Nickells persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Gabriel's guard against the cage.
Nickells wants to control from the top but Gabriel keeps moving.
Gabriel is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.

Gabriel is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Nickells sitting in guard here, content to control.
Gabriel controls Nickells momentarily but Nickells frees himself.
Nickells stopping the sweep attempt from Gabriel.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Nickells is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Justin Gabriel.
I think Gabriel has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
