PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Cross Lavi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ben Askren (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Cross Lavi!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Ben Askren!
The judges for this bout are Kenichi Hosakawa, Yukihiro Shimada and Hirohito Nitta.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
No luck for Lavi with that takedown attempt.
Lavi shoots in and drives through. Askren sprawls well.
Lavi shoots in but no luck this time.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Cross Lavi. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Lavi is trying hard to land a takedown here. Askren sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

Askren decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Askren is looking for a kimura but Lavi is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Askren to get the leverage.
Lavi flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Askren wants to free his trapped foot but Lavi is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Lavi trying to hold on to Askren's head to control him but Askren postures up.
Lavi is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Lavi throws a strike from the bottom that misses.
Askren is looking to take a break and control but Lavi is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Lavi tries for a takedown but Askren circles away easily

and Askren holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Askren breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Lavi misses with a takedown attempt

and Askren moves into the clinch.
Lavi tries to break free but Askren pushes him back against the cage.
Askren is pressed up against the cage. Lavi has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Askren down to the mat. Askren avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.

Askren clinches with his opponent.
Askren has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Lavi avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Lavi has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Askren is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
A bit of stalling here from Askren.

Askren tightens his grip and picks Lavi up, before dumping him to the ground. Lavi manages to land in guard.
Lavi has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Askren scoring with punches to the head and body.

Lavi looking for a guillotine here but Askren defends easily.

Lavi has his foot on Askren's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Askren works his way back into a safe position though.
Lavi is breathing heavily.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Askren looking to pass the guard.
Askren is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Lavi is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Lavi wants to sweep but no luck.
Askren slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Lavi looking to control.
Askren trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Lavi is looking to stand up but Askren isn't so interested in that idea.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Askren stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Lavi swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Askren controlling from the top position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Lavi gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Askren counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Askren.
Lavi wants to sweep but no luck.

Lavi is looking for a triangle but Askren pushes his legs off easily.

Lavi working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Askren doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Askren manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Lavi is actively looking for submissions from his back. He's worked himself a little space on the bottom and seems to be going for a triangle. No, he's switched into an armbar! That was slick! Askren rolls with it to try and escape but Lavi cranks on the arm and Askren is forced to tap out! This one is aaaaaaaaall over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:03 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Cross Lavi!
