PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Marcus Davis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and JD Mckenzie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Marcus Davis!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, JD Mckenzie!
The judges for this bout are Sam Margolis, Chris Edwards and James Atkins.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mckenzie blocks a jab.
Nice defenses there by Mckenzie.
Davis misses with a head kick.
Davis throws a jab when Mckenzie was well out of range.
Davis throws a sloppy head kick and Mckenzie moves out of range easily.
Davis throws a shot from downtown. Mckenzie moves away and avoids it.
A telegraphed right hand from Davis misses the target.
Davis lands a head kick. Mckenzie smiles back at him and beckons him forward.


It looks like JD Mckenzie has been cut.
Mckenzie lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Davis circles away quickly and effectively.
Davis swinging wildly here.
Mckenzie thows a body shot but no joy.
Davis throws a big shot that misses.
Davis moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.
Mckenzie looks gassed!

Davis tries to keep at a distance but Mckenzie has taken the fight into the clinch.

Davis's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Mckenzie drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Davis is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.
Davis on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Davis tries to get out of the position.

Mckenzie trying to control the action but Davis is working from the bottom.
Davis pushes Mckenzie away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Mckenzie gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Mckenzie decides to stand back up.
Mckenzie shoots for a double leg takedown but Davis sprawls well. He's pushed Mckenzie's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Marcus Davis seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Davis connects with a high kick.

Mckenzie slips a jab and a cross from Davis.
Davis throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Mckenzie takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
Davis fakes a jab and then connects with a hook.
A low kick from Mckenzie is predictable there
and Davis counters with a stiff right hand.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Mckenzie.
Davis wants to get back to his feet.
Davis knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Mckenzie on the ground.
Mckenzie controls the position.
Davis is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.
Mckenzie is putting a hurting on Davis here, landing some big shots from side control.

Mckenzie decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Davis misses with a looping left.

Mckenzie moves into the clinch successfully.
Davis tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Mckenzie just stands there and leans against the cage.
Mckenzie is trying to slow down the pace of the fight but Davis is keeping busy.

Davis ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Davis no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Davis is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Davis is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Mckenzie dives into side control.
Davis is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Mckenzie asserts his dominance and retains side control.
Mckenzie content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.

Mckenzie prevents Davis from escaping the position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Mckenzie throws a hook but Davis avoids it easily.
Mckenzie lands a two punch combo.
Davis misses with a head kick.
Davis stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Davis wants it to stay on the feet.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
No joy there for Mckenzie, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Marcus Davis will probably get the nod.
The cut man is working on JD Mckenzie's cut.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Davis throws a lazy right hand but Mckenzie sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Davis throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Davis is really head hunting here, hardly looking to strike to the body at all.
Mckenzie attempts a leg kick but it's missed by a good margin.
Mckenzie is looking to clinch.
Mckenzie blocks a jab.
Davis rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Mckenzie moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Mckenzie changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Davis tries to avoid it but Mckenzie manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Davis to the ground. Davis escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Mckenzie closes this distance looking for a takedown but Davis circles away.
Nice uppercut there from Davis.
Davis throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Mckenzie sees it coming and avoids it easily.
A head kick misses from Davis.
The fighters circle momentarily. Davis darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
Mckenzie moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.
Mckenzie moves out of range of the strikes.
Davis throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

Mckenzie shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Davis as he avoids it easily.
Marcus Davis has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of JD Mckenzie.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Davis lands an overhand right.
Davis connects with a right hand. Mckenzie shakes it off.
Davis waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Mckenzie.
Davis misses with an uppercut. Mckenzie saw that one coming.
Davis connects with a high kick.
Davis misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Mckenzie looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Davis!
Davis is trying to get to the cage to help him get back to his feet.
Mckenzie lands a heavy elbow.
Davis is trying to escape but when you're mounted that's not too easy.
Mckenzie cracks Davis with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.

Davis is trying to stand up.
Mckenzie looking to control and managing it successfully.
Mckenzie can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Davis is looking to escape.
Davis wants to try and get back to his feet.
Mckenzie trying to control but Davis is having none of it.
Davis wants to use the cage to get back to his feet here.

Mckenzie in mount throwing good strikes here, bouncing his opponent's head off the canvas.

Davis bucks up and throws Mckenzie to the side - he's got back to his feet. Great escape!
Mckenzie has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Davis finds it's way round the side to connect with Mckenzie's head.
Mckenzie misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Davis throws a head kick that connects with a bit of head and a bit of hand.
A head kick from Davis lands but Mckenzie takes it in his stride.
Mckenzie checks a low kick from Davis.
Davis loads up on a big right hand but Mckenzie slips the punch.

A head kick misses from Davis.
Mckenzie moves out of range as Davis strikes.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Mckenzie shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Davis pinned against the cage. Davis gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Mckenzie is looking to land body kicks.
An inside leg kick from Mckenzie misses.
Davis moves into range and connects with a jab.
Davis throws a right hand that Mckenzie ducks under and follows up with a left that Mckenzie also avoids with ease.

Mckenzie takes the fight into the clinch.
Davis is trying to slow down the pace of the fight but Mckenzie is keeping busy.
Mckenzie prevents a takedown attempt there.
Davis is trying to stall.
Davis just leaning against Mckenzie, taking a breather.
Davis tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Mckenzie smiles and moves away.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Davis throws a looping overhand right but Mckenzie ducks down to avoid it.
Davis throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Mckenzie.
Mckenzie slips a jab from Davis.
Davis throws the left hand but Mckenzie avoids the punch easily.
Mckenzie blocks a head kick by Davis.
Davis tries to bum rush Mckenzie with a series of wild strikes but Mckenzie uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Davis swats away the attempt to clinch by Mckenzie.
Davis lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Davis moves into range and connects with a jab.
Davis tries a head kick but it misses.

Mckenzie keeping at a good range here, avoiding a leg kick.

Mckenzie shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Davis as he jumps to the side.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Mckenzie shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Davis as he jumps to the side.

Davis throws a quick head kick that skims the top of Mckenzie's head.
Mckenzie staying out of range there.

Mckenzie wants to clinch up but Davis keeps it at a distance.
Mckenzie will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Davis missing with a left hand there. Mckenzie was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Mckenzie pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Mckenzie uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Davis.
Davis throws a leg kick which misses Mckenzie's front leg but catches the back leg as Mckenzie tries to avoid it.
Mckenzie is looking to land body kicks.
Mckenzie on the wrong end of a nice hook.
Davis lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Davis leaves Mckenzie with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
The fighters circling - Davis throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Mckenzie throws a push kick but Davis slaps the foot to one side.
Davis connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.

Mckenzie rushes Davis and presses him up against the cage.

Davis pulls Mckenzie into guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Davis wants to stand up but Mckenzie is controlling him.
JD Mckenzie has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Marcus Davis is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to JD Mckenzie.
I think Davis has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
