PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jim Mack (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ike Quartey (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jim Mack!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Ike Quartey!
The judges for this bout are Damien Edna, Bruno Hogan and John Mangel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mack throws a right hand that Quartey ducks under and follows up with a left that Quartey also avoids with ease.
Mack throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Quartey's waist but Quartey gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Mack off to one side.
Quartey avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Mack wants to clinch up but Quartey keeps it at a distance.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Mack.
Quartey is trying to improve his position.
Quartey is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Mack controls the position from side control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Quartey manages to work his way to half guard, despite Mack's best efforts.

Mack is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

Mack looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
Mack lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.

Mack is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Quartey defends it well.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Quartey has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Mack is working away from the top position though.
Mack looks to land a strike but Quartey avoids it nicely and regains full guard.
Quartey throws some shots to the body, keeping his opponent honest.
Quartey wants to control the position but Mack says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard.
Mack controlling the action here.
Mack is looking to take a break and control but Quartey is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Quartey looks gassed!

Mack decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.
Quartey with a poor takedown

so Mack counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Mack might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Quartey can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Mack controls the pace.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Quartey is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Mack decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Quartey has his takedown stuffed

so Mack counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Quartey looking for a sweep. Not yet Quartey, not yet.
Quartey is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Quartey throws a strike but Mack avoids it easily and moves to full guard.

Quartey in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Quartey postures up in Mack's guard and throws a big left but Mack blocks it.

Mack is looking for a triangle but Quartey pushes his legs off easily.
Mack is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.

Quartey has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Mack is proving hard to escape from.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Mack gets in close and instigates a clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



The fight moves into the clinch position.

Mack turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Mack manages to end up in side control.
Mack is looking to take a break and control but Quartey is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Quartey can't do much from the bottom here.
Quartey trying to remain calm as Mack controls from the top position.
Quartey gets back to half guard.
Mack stops Quartey from getting back to his feet.
Quartey is breathing heavily.

Mack is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Quartey defends it well.

Mack lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Mack tries to stand but his arm is trapped.
Quartey gets full guard.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Quartey wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Mack is now in half guard.
Still in half guard, Mack seems content to control.
Jim Mack overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Quartey wants to control but Mack is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Quartey has one foot on Mack's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.
Quartey darts in trying to clinch

and Mack decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Quartey's guard.

Quartey wriggles free and stands up.
Mack tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Quartey paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Quartey clinches but Mack breaks the clinch

and Mack counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.

Quartey is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Mack pulls his head out easily.

Quartey is defending against the submission attempts here by Mack.
Quartey is trying to maintain the position but Mack is very close to passing his half guard.
Mack works his foot free and advances to mount.
Quartey is in all sorts of trouble here.

Mack sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
BOOM! Mack connects with a massive shot to the dome!
Quartey keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

Mack is standing up, even though he is in mount.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Quartey tries to bum rush Mack with a series of wild strikes but Mack uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Mack shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jim Mack dominated that second round.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Mack wants to clinch up but Quartey keeps it at a distance.
Mack misses with a low kick.

Mack drives through with a takedown into guard.
Mack seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Mack has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Mack seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Quartey for as long as he can get away with.

Mack stands and steps away. Quartey gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Mack misses with a knee strike.
Mack tries to pull guard but Quartey won't allow it.
Mack drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Quartey gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Quartey jumps guard but Mack stands there with Quartey around his waist. Quartey gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Quartey fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Quartey blocking some punches.
Mack is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Quartey gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jim Mack. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Quartey tries to score a body lock takedown but Mack shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.
Quartey wants to break the clinch but can't.

Quartey keeps control of Mack as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Mack misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Quartey.
Mack drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Quartey gets the underhooks and prevents it.

Quartey manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground.

Mack scores with a takedown into Quartey's guard.

Quartey has his foot on Mack's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Mack works his way back into a safe position though.

The referee warns Quartey that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
Ike Quartey has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Mack, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
