PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Winston Ashley (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Paul Sullivan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Ashley comes to the ring accompanied by Continue To Be by David Arkenstone. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Winston Ashley!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Paul Sullivan!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sullivan blocks a jab.
Ashley paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.
The fighters circling - Ashley throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Ashley bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Sullivan's head.
A swing and a miss from Ashley.
Sullivan ducks under a wild hook from Ashley.

Sullivan closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Ashley to the mat! Ashley manages to get full guard.
Ashley wants to sweep here but Sullivan controlling him for the moment.
Sullivan advances position into side control!
Ashley is trying to improve his position.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Sullivan looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Ashley tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Sullivan wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Sullivan is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Ashley has escaped the position, nice work there.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Sullivan trying to control the position but Ashley is working away.
Ashley gets back to half guard.
Ashley has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Sullivan is working away from the top position though.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Ashley tries to roll over but Sullivan keeps him under control.

Sullivan is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Sullivan is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Ashley defends it well.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Ashley wants to control but Sullivan is keeping busy.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Ashley tries to get to full guard but Sullivan has control of the leg.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Paul Sullivan dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Ashley throws a big shot that misses.
Ashley misses with a looping left.
Ashley cracks Sullivan with a good jab.
Paul Sullivan is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Sullivan slips under a jab from Ashley.
Ashley throws a nice looking combination but Sullivan bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Ashley jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Sullivan ducks under a wild hook from Ashley.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Sullivan.

Sullivan preventing the sweep.
Sullivan wants to control from the top but Ashley keeps moving.
Sullivan's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Ashley looking to hit a scissor sweep but Sullivan is one step ahead there.
Ashley not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Sullivan stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Ashley swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Ashley looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Ashley throws a shot from downtown. Sullivan moves away and avoids it.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Ashley misses with a two punch combination.
Ashley goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.
Sullivan fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Sullivan shoots for a double leg takedown but Ashley sprawls well. He's pushed Sullivan's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Winston Ashley has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Paul Sullivan.
Sullivan rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Ashley moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Sullivan uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Ashley.
Ashley misses with a double jab

so Sullivan counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Ashley looking for a sweep. Not yet Ashley, not yet.
Sullivan wants to control from the top but Ashley keeps moving.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Ashley has his hands on Sullivan's head, controlling the position.
Sullivan passes Ashley's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Sullivan is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Ashley is just riding it out for now. Sullivan eventually gives up the hold.

Sullivan is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Ashley sees it coming and defends easily.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Paul Sullivan showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Sullivan is trying hard to land a takedown here. Ashley sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Horrible takedown by Sullivan or perhaps it was just good defense by Ashley which made him look bad.
A right-left combo lands from Ashley.
Ashley misses with a hook.
Ashley cracks Sullivan with an open hand slap.
Ashley displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Sullivan.
Winston Ashley has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Paul Sullivan.
Ashley throws a lazy head kick

and Sullivan counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Ashley!
Ashley tries to reverse the position but Sullivan maintains control.

Sullivan goes for an armbar but Ashley turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Ashley.

Sullivan working for submissions but it's allowed Ashley to get to half guard.
Sullivan takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Ashley seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Ashley is trying to control. Sullivan wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Sullivan is looking to control Ashley's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Sullivan avoid being mounted?

The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
Ashley wants to take a breather but Sullivan is having none of it.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Ashley misses with an uppercut.
Sullivan looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Ashley is fending him off so far but Sullivan persists. Nope, Ashley circles away and we're back to standing.
Ashley looks to throw the jab but Sullivan is out of range.
Ashley swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Ashley scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Ashley throws a jab when Sullivan was well out of range.
Sullivan ducks under a wild hook from Ashley.
Ashley throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and Sullivan counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Ashley's guard now.
Ashley is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Sullivan drops back, looking for a kneebar! Ashley looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Ashley looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Ashley!
Ashley is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.

Sullivan struggling a bit here.
A lull in the action here as Ashley stalls from top position.
Ashley working away.
Winston Ashley has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Sullivan is trying to avoid being dragged into an even worse position than he's already in but Ashley is staying active.
The referee asks Ashley politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Ashley prefers to stall for the moment though.
Ashley wants to take a breather but Sullivan manages to regain guard - a lesson learnt for Ashley.
Ashley postures up.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Paul Sullivan.
I've got Sullivan winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
