PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Al Capone (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rajon Rondo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Al Capone!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Rajon Rondo !
The judges for this bout are Trevor Gratis, Alec Ball and Ian Loll.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Capone dives in and grabs Rondo 's left leg, looking for a takedown. Rondo pushes down on Capone's head and hops out.
Rondo gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Capone counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Rondo trying to hold on to Capone's head to control him but Capone postures up.
Capone is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!
Poor strikes thrown by Capone there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!

Capone working for a submission but Rondo is keeping him at bay.
Rondo is trying desperately to improve position.
Capone punching from mount but Rondo doing a good job of avoiding damage.
Rondo regains half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Rondo is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Capone has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Capone is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Capone is breathing heavily.
Capone is thwarting Rondo 's attempts to control the position.
Capone throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Rondo is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Capone not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Capone thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Rondo 's head.
Capone wants to stand but Rondo has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.
Rondo is trying is best to control the position here.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Rondo shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Capone counters with a shoot takedown. Rondo fights it but they end up in guard.
Capone wants to control from the top but Rondo keeps moving.
Rondo bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Capone's guard.

Rondo gets to his feet - Capone follows without any prompting.
Rajon Rondo seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Rondo clinches.

Rondo escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Rondo fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Capone avoids it really well and circles away.
Al Capone has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Rajon Rondo .

Capone shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Rondo manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Capone avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Rondo really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Capone. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Rondo keeping moving, preventing Capone from controlling successfully.
Rondo trying to keep a closed guard but Capone is proving a slippery customer.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Capone throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Rondo works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Capone wants to control from the top but Rondo keeps moving.
Rondo wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

Capone is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Rondo tries to clinch there but Capone circles away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Al Capone dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Capone thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

Capone is working for a kimura but Rondo is defending it quite comfortably.

Capone is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Rondo defends it well.

Capone seems to be looking for submissions.

Capone is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Rondo is just riding it out for now. Capone eventually gives up the hold.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Capone throwing shots but Rondo is blocking nicely.
Rondo keeping control of the position.
Rondo tries to get to full guard but Capone has control of the leg.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Rondo instigates a clinch.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Capone tries to break the clinch but Rondo is controlling the position.

Rondo has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Capone uses from the top position.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Capone accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Rondo looking to hit a scissor sweep but Capone is one step ahead there.

Rondo is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Al Capone overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Capone slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Capone misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.

Capone wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Rondo , who protects the arm well.

Capone trying to control the position but Rondo is working away.
Capone throwing strikes but missing, from side control.

Capone is trying to get an arm triangle but Rondo is defending well.
Rondo is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Capone has hold of Rondo 's arm. He's looking for a kimura. Rondo seems comfortable defending it but Capone has shifted his position slighty and is cranking on the arm! Rondo is real pain and he's forced to tap out! Rondo is disgusted with himself for not defending it better but Capone couldn't care less - he's delighted!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:10 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Al Capone!
