PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Phal Um (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ivan Emelianenko (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 21 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Phal Um!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Ivan Emelianenko!
The judges for this bout are Trevor Gratis, Steve Smith and Ian Loll.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Um is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Emelianenko.
Emelianenko swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Um throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Emelianenko sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Emelianenko misses with a body shot.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Um is defended easily by Emelianenko.
Emelianenko throws a hook but Um blocks it.
Um ducks under a wild hook from Emelianenko.
Um uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Emelianenko.
Um throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Emelianenko's waist but Emelianenko gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Um off to one side.

Emelianenko gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Emelianenko escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Um gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Emelianenko looking for subs off his back but Um has passed one foot through into half guard.

Emelianenko tries to get to full guard but Um has control of the leg.
Um wants to take a breather but Emelianenko is having none of it.
Um will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Um controlling the action here.
Emelianenko is looking to control Um's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Emelianenko avoid being mounted?
Um missing with the ground and pound from half guard.
Emelianenko wants to control but Um is keeping busy.
Um is looking to take a break and control but Emelianenko is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Emelianenko dives in and grabs Um's left leg, looking for a takedown. Um pushes down on Emelianenko's head and hops out.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Um.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Phal Um. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Um staying out of range there.
Emelianenko fails to land with a series of punches.

Um looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Um working Emelianenko over with strikes.
Um seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Emelianenko wants to get back to full guard.
Emelianenko is refusing to be controlled, as Um sits in half guard.
Emelianenko avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Um.

Um seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

Emelianenko is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Um pulls his head out easily.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Um is thwarting Emelianenko's attempts to control the position.
Emelianenko tries to roll over but Um keeps him under control.
Um throwing shots but Emelianenko is blocking nicely.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Um shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Um showed some decent athleticism there.
Um thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Emelianenko's head.

Emelianenko tries to get to full guard but Um has control of the leg.
Um passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Emelianenko!

Um tries to control but Emelianenko wriggling away.
Um blocks Emelianenko's feeble attempts to strike from the bottom.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Phal Um dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Um lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.
Um shoots in but no luck this time.
Um slips a straight right by Emelianenko.
Um closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.
Um misses with a few strikes there.
Emelianenko swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Um looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Um uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Emelianenko.

and Emelianenko makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.

and Emelianenko counters with a straight right hand.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Um moves out of range as Emelianenko strikes.
Emelianenko throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Emelianenko throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Um takes a swing at Emelianenko's ribcage but misses.
Um fails to land the takedown.
Um connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt.

Um gets a clinch.

Emelianenko pulls guard successfully.
Um preventing the sweep.
Emelianenko manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Emelianenko throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Um because Emelianenko loaded up on that one.

Emelianenko misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.
Emelianenko breaks from Um's wrist control and lands an elbow.
Um regains half guard.

Emelianenko is trying to work for a kimura but Um is defending well.

Ivan Emelianenko showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Um wants to clinch up but Emelianenko keeps it at a distance.

Um drops an elbow to the side of Emelianenko's head.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Um lands a nice short elbow.
Um scoring with strikes to the body and head.
Um is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
Um missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Um scores with a couple of good hammerfists.
Um sitting and controlling from the half guard.
Emelianenko is pressing down on Um's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
