PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Jay Leno (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Joey Diaz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Leno comes to the cage accompanied by My Monologue. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Leno looking for a takedown here - he's got it.

Diaz has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Leno can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Diaz is trying to control the position but Leno postures up.

Diaz looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Leno throws a big right hand that misses.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Leno content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
Leno postures up in Diaz's guard and throws a big left but Diaz blocks it.
Diaz keeping moving, preventing Leno from controlling successfully.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Diaz controls Leno momentarily but Leno frees himself.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Leno clobbers Diaz with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
Diaz doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Leno makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
Diaz looks gassed!
Leno is looking to score with low kicks.
Leno cracks Diaz with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.
Leno misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Diaz takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Diaz blocks a head kick by Leno.
Leno scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Diaz doesn't seem bothered though.

Leno scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Diaz is trying to get back to half guard.
Diaz is working to avoid the ground and pound but Leno connects with a decent elbow.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Leno controlling the position.
Leno in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Leno wants to control but Diaz is keeping him busy.
Leno landing a few strikes.
Leno cracks Diaz with a big right hand but Diaz just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.

Diaz takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.
Leno wants to lay and pray for a moment but Diaz keeps working.
Leno lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.

Diaz takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head.
Leno lands some shots froms side control.
Leno in side control lands a nice looking series of punches and elbows.
Leno wants to lay and pray for a moment but Diaz keeps working.
Leno remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
Leno lands an elbow.
Leno tries to move to mount but Diaz blocks the move with his legs.
Diaz parries the strikes from Leno easily there. Leno is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Diaz to escape.
Diaz takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.

Diaz is trying to improve his position.
Leno trying to control the position but Diaz is working away.

Leno landing with strikes to the head and body from side control.
Diaz is looking to reverse the position.
Leno cracks Diaz with an elbow. That is naaassty.
Diaz is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Diaz takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Leno lands a few punches from side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jay Leno dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Diaz takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.
Diaz checks a low kick from Leno.
Nice defenses there by Diaz.
Diaz ducks under a wild hook from Leno.
Leno throws and low kick but Diaz moves out of range easily.
Diaz throws a sloppy head kick and Leno moves out of range easily.
Leno keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Diaz misses with a takedown
and Leno counters with a nice uppercut.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Diaz on the wrong end of an overhand right that came out of nowhere.

Leno shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Diaz manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Leno throwing strikes but missing.
Diaz is breathing heavily.
Leno looking to sit in guard and control but Diaz gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Leno wants to stand but Diaz is controlling the position.
Diaz stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Leno swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Leno is trying to keep Diaz in close.

Leno is not content to let Diaz control the position.
Leno keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Leno knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Diaz on the ground.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Leno is defending against the submission attempts here by Diaz.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Leno misses with a double jab.
Leno tests Diaz's chin there with a solid looking shot.
A big left from Diaz misses.
Diaz looks to score with a jab to the body but Leno is just out of range.
Leno looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Diaz showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Leno.
Diaz tries to move into range but Leno moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.
Leno throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Diaz walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.
The fighters circling - Leno throws out the jab but it was never going to land.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Leno getting the better of the striking in that exchange.
Leno lands a jab-cross combination.
The fight stays on the outside here - Leno looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Leno gets a takedown into half guard.
Leno throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Diaz wants to control but Leno is keeping busy.

Leno thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! And we move into the final round!


Diaz takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.

Leno changes levels and scores with a jab to the body.
Leno misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Diaz moves into range and clinches up with Leno.
Diaz fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Leno throws a head punch that misses.
Leno is trying to break free.
Leno misses with a punch to the body.
Leno is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Diaz takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Leno is trying to force a seperation but Diaz has the dominant position.
Diaz prevents a body shot from Leno.

A right hand to the body from Leno.

Leno is trying to trip Diaz. He has hold of a leg but Diaz is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Leno persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Diaz looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Diaz has his foot on Leno's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Leno works his way back into a safe position though.

Diaz doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Diaz shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Leno counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Jay Leno has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Joey Diaz.
Diaz avoids a punch combination nicely.
Leno is moving around nicely and scores here with a single head shot.
Leno throws a leg kick but he was too far away and it doesn't land.
Leno stuns Diaz with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range.
Leno ducks down and throws a hook to the body.

Leno uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Diaz has time to react.
Diaz avoids the head kick by Leno.
Leno throws a series of punches but Diaz avoids them all with ease.

Leno misses with a few strikes there.
Nice shot lands for Leno.
Leno with a body punch. A glancing blow.
Leno keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.
Leno is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Diaz can do to turn this around?
Diaz on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.
Jay Leno is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Leno will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

and Leno counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Diaz's guard now.
Leno is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
An inside leg kick lands from Leno.
Diaz takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.
Leno paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.
Joey Diaz has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Leno lands a jab to Diaz's midsection.

Jay Leno showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Leno has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
