The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hughes closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Cyren keeping hold of Hughes's head, controlling as best he can.

Cyren feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Hughes cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!

and Hughes counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Cyren is staying active underneath Hughes, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Hughes is taking a breather. Cyren says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Hughes is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Cyren is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Cyren shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Cyren wants to work for an arm triangle but Hughes is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Hughes might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Hughes is refusing to be controlled, as Cyren sits in half guard.
Cyren is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Hughes is just riding it out for now. Cyren eventually gives up the hold.
Cyren is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Matt Hughes.
Well Hughes has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
